Hiring a Doula and Attending Bradley Classes Helped Renea During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I had been in and out of active labor for 2 weeks leading up to the real thing. This was tiring but worth it because once my body went into full labor it was really fast. I woke up at 5:30am with strong, painful contractions that were only 3 minutes apart.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging thing was other people who thought it wasn't possible. I made my mind up, prepared well for it and it was a great experience!

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

A doula!! She was the main reason I delivered natural. When things were getting hard, she stepped in, helped me change positions and taught my husband how to squeeze my hips during contractions to lessen the pain. Also, attending Bradley classes was a huge help as well.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How easy it was! I was able to focus and visualize during the birth. I kept my eyes closed most of the time and the time went quickly, and pain was bearable.

  • You have to make the decision in your heart and then do all you can to make it happen. You can't decode partially...you have to fully decide before you do it.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Visualization, low noises during contractions, counter pressure on hips, birth ball, changing positions.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

Side lying for the last 2 pushes. Before that, hands and knees

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

    Redemptive!!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

You have to make the decision in your heart and then do all you can to make it happen. You can't decode partially...you have to fully decide before you do it.
