Staying Active During Her Pregnancy Helped Nikki During Her Home Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

About 1am the morning of the 4th. I couldn't sleep through contractions and my husband let me sleep on him between them and rubbed my back when they hit.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Transition! Oh wow...nothing prepared me for the power in the contractions during this time. I yelled that I wanted drugs!! We were at home so that wasn't an option, and now I'm really glad for it.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Stayed active during my pregnancy. My health and stamina were a huge factor in getting through labor naturally. I live on a small farm and continued to do farm work (within my ability) even through the early stages of labor.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How euphoric I would be when my child was born! I had heard that it was beyond anything I had ever felt, but nothing prepared me for the rush of love when my husband layed my son on my chest.

  • It's worth it! It's so hard. Probably one of the hardest things I've ever done, but it is SO worth it! Worth every pain, every overwhelming sensation, everything. I was pushed beyond what I thought were my limits and came out on top. Nothing else in the world has ever made me feel more powerful, more capable or more prepared to start my journey into motherhood. Just remember when it doesn't feel like you can do it...you are already doing it!!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Massage during active labor. I had back labor so counter pressure was wonderful. During transition hot water (REALLY hot) on my belly was the only thing that helped.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

Hands and knees. I could rest between contractions and still have leverage to push.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Euphoric!! That really is the only word to describe it. I was on a different plane of reality and couldn't believe that this had actually happened! My husband delivered him, layed him on me and I just kept saying "I can't believe it! You're here!" over and over again.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

It's worth it!
