Staying Active Helped Rebecca During Her Birth Center Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

My midwife did a cervical sweep since I was almost a week late. We all expected that if I did go into labor, it would be in a day or so. Nope! I started having contractions before I left the birthing center! I knew it was getting real when, on the drive back home, I had to crawl in the back seat to get in the fetal position! When my husband and I got home, the contractions intensified and got closer together. After a few hours of this pattern, we knew it was the real deal.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging thing about going natural was feeling EVERYTHING! The back pain... goodness!!!! There were so many moments where I didn't think I could do it. If it weren't for my midwife and husband by my side, I would have easily given up.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

The most helpful thing I did to prepare for childbirth was to stay active. I went from running pre-pregnancy to brisk walking, I did pregnancy workouts, and did all exercises the midwives suggested.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I DID IT!!! When others doubted, including family, and encouraged me to get an epidural or to go to a hospital, I had to believe in my own strength. It's such a mental event! If you truly believe you can do it, then you can! So, I guess what surprised me about my little girl's birth was my own strength!

  • YOU CAN DO IT! We were created for bearing children. Think about all the billions of women before us and the millions around the world who go natural because it's their culture. If they can do it, then you certainly can, too! Dig deep within yourself and tune in to your inner strength. Surround yourself with those who will support you and believe in yourself!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

The pain relief strategies working best for me were listening to music and switching positions every 30 minutes or so. Oh, and listening to my midwife when she offered advice.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I ended up delivering in a tub sitting down with my legs up.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

As educated as I am, I do not have the vocabulary to describe the feeling of holding my first child. Relief, joy, peace, thankfulness, curiosity, love...so many emotions!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

YOU CAN DO IT! We were created for bearing children. Think about all the billions of women before us and the millions around the world who go natural because it's their culture. If they can do it, then you certainly can, too! Dig deep within yourself and tune in to your inner strength. Surround yourself with those who will support you and believe in yourself!
