Paloma Skye. Beautiful name, right? But it’s a bit of an unusual choice for a non-Spanish speaking couple to pick for their baby. There’s actually kind of an interesting story behind it, and in this video, I’ll tell you all about it.

Since I found your web and discover your work I was curious about how you and your husband ended up choosing that name, and it is a wonderful story; such a great one to tell her.

Mine is similar to your daughter, is Paloma Marciel: Mar(sea)Cielo(Sky), and I had always love the combination that my father created, sea and sky dove.

My oldest daughter is Ivy Grace. I fell in love with the name “Ivy” when I first watched “The Village”, lol. She has my middle name.

My second daughter is Violet LouEtta. She came after two miscarriages and two years of infertility. She is my rainbow baby, and she is my sparkle child. Besides, my husband and I decided we needed to grow a flower garden 😉 Her middle name was my husband’s grandmother’s name, which I thought was just beautiful.

Our son is Andrew Todd, Drew for short. We couldn’t agree on any garden-themed names for a boy, so we decided to name him after Brother Andrew, a Dutch missionary who smuggled Bibles behind the Iron Curtain. His middle name is my father-in-law’s first name, and my husband’s middle name.

My husband and I are naming our daughter Sakura Rosemary Therese. We either receive really positive feedback, or really negative feedback. Sakura means cherry blossom in Japanese, and is popular as a given name over in Japan. We are both white as white can be. My husband has had her first name picked out since he was 14 years old. He essentially feel in love with the meaning, and the beauty of cherry blossoms. I initially was reluctant. Over time my feelings changed, and I now love it. The cherry blossom tree represents a calling from God to us that we are on the right path. A particular instance is when my husband got out of school and was looking for a job. The company he ended up applying to, interviewing with, and getting hired at is located on Cherry Blossom Street. We knew it was meant to be after that. Rosemary has a little less meaning. My husband loves roses and so do I. But, I wanted her to have my middle name since my middle name, Marie goes way back in my family. So, we chose a variation and combined the name to make Rosemary. Therese for St. Therese the Little Flower. This little saint helped pave my path and form my relationship with God. I am a convert to Catholic Christianity. Without this little saints devotions and ways I would not have had the grace to accept Jesus Christ into my life. Why two middle name? Because we can’t imagine her without them.

Love name stories! We have a Maverick Elwood – Maverick means wildly independent (which is crazy accurate). Named him that because we want him to be independent and not conform to this world! Elwood is his grandpa’s name and his daddy’s middle name. We also have Olive Josephine – Olive brings to mind peace and was my great grandmother’s name. Josephine means God will increase. Hoping God brings her much peace in her life!

We named my son Bradley after Bradley nowell from sublime and my son miles Anthony got his middle name from his grandpa. My daughter was named holly Sophia. Holly is the name of the main character from my favorite movie breakfast at Tiffanys. Sadly she was stillborn and is with Jesus.

Picasso named his daughter Paloma because he loved pigeons oh so much, and painted them a bunch.

My 3 children have unusual names and one of them I picked has got no meaning as far as I could tell. My daughter is Sasmyne my sons are called Israel-Steven and the youngest is called Zethee

  I had extremely difficult labours and births resulting in c-sections with all 3 and because I was at hospital by myself I chose those names while exhausted, in pain and woozy but they have all grown on me!

    How much of a coincidence. My daughter is called Jasmine my middle child is called Kyle-Steven and my youngest is called Zeth. I wanted to name him Seth but the epidural and gas made me loopy so I said Z instead of an S for his name!

pretty cool. I was wondering why you named them that 🙂 we wanted to give our kids one name that said something about who God is and another name that was a characteristic or personality trait they could grow into and exhibit in life. So our son is Jace Ean (God is forgiving and gracious; and God is my salvation) and our daughter is Chàris Eliana (grace, kindness and charm; and God answers our prayers). Praying they grow into those names

My youngest daughter is named Seneca. I named her after the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848, the first women’s rights convention in the United States.
My oldest daughter is named Yasmeen. She is half Arab and this was a name that her father and I both liked.
My son is Liam. I just really liked the name Liam. In 1999, it wasn’t as popular as it is now. The name wasn’t even on the list of top 100 baby names in America. Now it is number 2. He has an Arabic last name, so it is an interesting combination.

I love both the names Paloma and Griffin, btw, what is Griffin’s middle name? We decided to name our son Sebastian Joseph. Sebastian meaning venerable and majestic while Joseph is an old family name. He is often called Bass or Seabass. I also wanted a name that would stand alone in his pier group. I see so many of the same names over and over. I really hope to have another baby because I have such wonderful unique names picked out. thank you for this blog, I love it!

  Don’t know if you’re even still reading this, but my twins (b/g, now 6) are Paloma and Sebastian. Neither I nor Daddy are of hispanic origins but we are in a major Spanish-speaking area and the names are great and work well together. Paloma especially loves her name and that it has a meaning. I and Daddy have typical 80s names with no special meaning or significance attached. So if “sarah” or some one similarly situated reads this, name according to your heart and what it tells you.

we found out we were pregnant with our first, we decided to be surprised. i always knew what I wanted to name my son, if i were ever to have one. we were at a loss as far as picking a name for a girl, but we knew we wanted something unisex and cool. we were back and forth, then one day when i was wearing a GoT tank top of the stark family’s sigil and family motto, it was perfectly aligned with my now rounded belly:
“winter is coming.”
there was no question as to what we would name our daughter. it was kismet. she was born on 01/16/2014, on a strangely hot day. as this winter has been hot in SoCal.
so we named our daughter: winter hinata.
hinata means always in the sun in japanese.
now we are hoping we when we have baby #2, we can utilize the boy’s name i’ve been harboring for over 20 years!

We named our son Clyde Alistair. Clyde means from the river Clyde or he who washes (we can hope, right?). Alistair is defender of man. We wanted a powerful one syllable, celtic name like his father and granfather. (Clark and Carl) We also had to have the initials C.A.J to fall fourth in line with those initials in my husbands family. Our daugthers name is Margaret Rose. My great grandmother’s name was Magaretta so we tweaked it a little. My favorite teacher when in school wanted to use my middle name when I was acting up but I didn’t tell her what it was. She just started calling me Tiffany Rose. It stuck. My little gal was also born in June so the rose is her flower. 🙂 Paloma is a lovely name! I love all these stories!

I love reading all these name choosing stories! I am so glad people put thought into each name- meaning is so important.
I have 1 son who is 6 weeks old.
For the longest time my husband and I were between Silas and Elias.
Silas- dweller of the forest and a missionary in the Bible, who while in prison prayed and sang praises to God and the jail shook and set the captives free.
Elias- Thr Lord My God. A form of Elijah.
I liked the name Silas better because it sounded so unique and fun.
However, after my MIL passed away in October and had said she like Elias better and when our son was born with a nuchal chord and had seizures, we thought Elias was so appropriate- Elias Emmanuel- “The Lord My God, God is with us”.

We named our newest addition Amelia Lou. Amelia is a character from Dr. Who. My husband and I had been watching the TV series and as soon as we realized the character Amy real name was Amelia looked at each other and fell in love with the name. Her middle name is Lou after my late mother who passed away 2.5 years ago. I wanted my mom’s 4th grand child to be named in honor of her and also want Amelia to have a piece of the grandmother she will never meet here on earth.

  BTW, I only have two kids! The other two grandkids belong to my sister. 🙂 We have our almost 6 year daughter Sofia Mei and Amelia Lou. Strangely enough me, my husband, Sofia and Amelia were all born on Tuesdays and second to last letter in our first names have I’s in them. 🙂

We have a Ruby Juniper & Everett William.

Ruby was my great grandmother’s name. When Ruby Juniper was born, we called our folks to tell them the news. It was then that my Dad informed us that they share the same birthday (April 1st). Coincidence? Hmmmm…..
I picked Juniper as her middle name because I’m a nature lover & really liked how it sounded with Ruby.

When choosing a name for Everett, we really liked old cowboy type names like Emmett, Garrett & Wyatt. But I wanted something a bit more unique. Everett means strong, brave & hearty which means a lot to me having tried for a VBAC with him. William is my husband’s middle name.

We have 4 boys, the first names are something special to us and the middle names are family names.

Mason Kyle: Mason was the name my mother was going to use for the son she miscarried. Kyle is his uncle’s name.

Daiden Christopher: Daiden is a name my husband had picked out since he was in high school. It’s actually the name of one of the main characters in the movie “Hackers.” My husband makes his living on his computer so it’s certainly appropriate. Christopher is my late father-in-law’s name. He passed when my husband was only 5 years old.

Elijah Richard: Elijah means “The Lord is My God” and Richard is the name of my husband’s step father.

Ezra Michael: Ezra means “helper” and is a beautiful Hebrew name that my husband and I both loved. We were actually between Ezra and Silas for his name and my midwife would tell me all the time that she felt like he was Ezra. We didn’t name him until he was 2 days old and she was right! Michael is my husband’s middle name.

We don’t have any future boy names selected, but if we have a girl she will be Cadence Antoinette. Cadence because my husband is a drummer and Antoinette is my husband’s late grandmother’s name.

Love Paloma Skye!

My son is Eli Marshall. Eli- means God is Exalted and we just liked it. (And it was one of the few we could actually agree on!) Marshall is a name passed down in my husbands family.

My daughter is Zoe Anneliese-Zoe means Abundant Life and Anneliese is Grace or Devoted to God. I loved the name and it took us almost the whole pregnancy to come up with it. Then my SIL visited me in the hospital when she had just been born and made a snarky comment about it sounding like “Zoe-on-a-leash” and it could be her stripper name. She has since apologized but even now 10 months later I can’t hear my daughter’s full name without that image in my head. I want to change it (just the middle name) but my husband thinks I’m being silly. Hopefully the comment will fade from my memory with time.

Im catholic and my husband I decided to name our kids after saints

Veronica, Adrian, Adriel Damien, and Andres

The only one not having a saints first name is Adriel it means of God’s congregation in Hebrew but he has Damian as a baptismal name for St. Damien of molokai.

I thought of something nature based at first but being named Seasons myself I got picked on horribly also none of my spanish speaking in laws could pronounce my name let alone Rowan or River which were my first choices for my daughter. LOL but divine inspiration is where Ill go if ever I have another child.

My son’s name is Asher = happy in Hebrew and I want him to be happy in his life.

my daughters name is Liat = “you are mine” in Hebrew (say : Lee-Aht) and thought it was a sweet unique name, “she is my daughter”

My daughter’s name is Kara Elizabeth or “Karabeth”. We have a really long, 14-letter, Greek lastname… So we wanted something short and easy to spell. After much deliberation, I decided to do a reverse search of her nickname in utero, “Precious,” and found Kara which means “Precious one, beloved one, cherished one.” Then my husband chose Elizabeth for her middle name, so we could call her Karabeth. Elizabeth has been a favorite of mine since I was a young girl, so I was thrilled with the choice! Then we found out Elizabeth means “Promised of God” and that cinched it… Her whole name means “Our Precious Promise of God.” – which is extremely significant to us, as it took us almost 2yrs before we were able to conceive her.

  Forgot to say, our last name is not only long and foreign… its also not pronounced at all how it looks. But while we wanted something short and easy to spell… And holds a significant meaning… I also didn’t want it to be something so simple, that if she one day marries and chooses to take her husband’s last name, it would be so common it’s boring.

Second, we named our first son ben david (as his first name), which means beloved son, what jesus heard from the father of his identity before going into the desert and hearing the devil tempt him to question his identity. Its unusual, but it always is a chance to explain bevause people always ask why not benjamin, why a double first name,etc!

I guess you could say my kids named themselves, because neither first name was on either of our lists. My daughter, who didn’t have a name for two days, is Neila Esperanza. When she was born she looked like a little alien – pointy head and big black eyes. We started calling her Little Alien. Then I mentioned that alien backwards is Neila. Amazingly, my husband liked it and the meanings fit her. I chose Esperanza because it fit her beginning of life circumstances. My son, who didn’t have a name for almost a week, is Noah Christopher. He was premature and spent the first month in the hospital. One day while he was sleeping I tried random names on him and none fit. When I said Noah he seemed to glow. I mentioned the name to my husband and, amazingly, he liked it. He chose Christopher to honor a friend. So now I have a “Passionate Champion Cloud of Hope” and a “Restful and Peaceful Follower of Christ”.

Our daughter’s first name, Skylar, was chosen just because I liked it, but her middle name has more of a story. I had just split up from my first husband and “escaped” to the island of Maui on a working vacation one winter. I found a room for rent in a house with a wonderful woman named Sheila. She worked as an educational assistant with special needs students at the local high school. She told me about the teacher she worked with, who happened to be my age and had just gone through a divorce as well. She introduced us and that is how I met my husband and Skylar’s father. A few years after we met, Sheila got pancreatic cancer and passed away. She was our angel, and the reason we were together, so when we had our daughter it was just natural that we gave her that name to honor a woman who meant so much to us.

We have 2 boys. I really love to look at meanings of names. My oldest is Gabriel Malachi. Gabriel means “God is my Strength” and Malachi means “Messenger” We call him Gabe. Our second son is Simeon Nathanael. Simeon means “heard” and Nathanael is “gift of God” he truly is! We also named him Simeon because of the story in the Bible where Mary and Joseph bring Jesus to the temple. Simeon is the man who dedicated him and was waiting all those years to see the promised one! Its such a beautiful story and one of my very favorites, the only downfall is that it is not well known so many people call him Simon 🙁 we call him Sam because my Great great grandpas name was Simeon and they called him Sam (and I also just LOVE Sam :))

Genevieve, I’m late in writing you. I’m the commenter who had the same due (Thanksgiving) date as you! My beautiful daughter was born on Nov. 25, just three days after your Paloma Skye. We namedour daughter Maya Sofia Grace F. Maya was originally a nod to my Mayan heritage, but we learned it has abundant meanings in so many cultures/languages all around the world (eg. Hebrew, Arabic, Japanese, Maori) including even meaning Love in Nepali! It’s also a shorter form of Maria! She is a lovely little Maya, but ironically my Mayan and African heritage is completely undiscernible in her little white face, blue eyes, and light auburn hair! We are mostly all dark haired, and mostly brown eyes in both families! It’s a genetic mystery and throw back a few generations for her to look like this! Anyway, fun! One dark curly haired child and one light child, who look almost nothing like each other! They are both beautiful and full of light inside, we are so blessed.

Thank you for sharing so much of your life and learning, Genevieve, I look forward to your updates every week and often consult older posts when wondering what to do parenting/healthwise. Most recently we have used your homemade jello post to make some fabulous gelatins with organic juices (including prune!) that are a hit at home and at playdates. We cut them into hearts and stars with small cookie cutters.

Anyway, my last comment, is you and Mike are so amazing. I admire your relationship deeply (so sweet the book her made you, your compatibility and warmth), and LOVE the name Paloma Skye and what is means in light of your shared history. Precious. The names Paloma and Griffin don’t exactly match, but they sound wonderful together! And their bond is lovely. We are fortunate in that department, too. Hana is such a loving and attentive big (just 20 months apart) sister.

We just *knew* we were having a boy and had several solid name choices… when our baby was born a girl after all. There was definitely a little scrambling! lol
We ended up bringing home Ellery Jade… Ellery because it was the only first name we could agree on, and Jade because (like you and Skye) I went through allllll of the names before I could find one that seemed to bridge Ellery and our last name well.
Had a good laugh when it turned out that Ellery is actually a boy’s name originally anyway 😛

My husband and I met through music, and music has been a part of our lives since then. We’ve been in bands together, and now we’re the worship leaders at our church. So we named our baby girl, Lyric Elizabeth. Elizabeth is a family named that has been passed down since my great grandmother as a middle name, so I wanted my first daughter to have it as a middle name as well. 🙂

We didn’t get to name our oldest luckily she already had a beautiful one, Madeleine. Next came Jack Johnston for my grandfather of the same name. Next we wanted to name a child after my husband’s family, so we had Carter Ellison, same middle name as my husband and his father and the same initials. Next we had triplets and that was super intimidating, naming 3 children at once! We found out there were 2 girls and 1 boy. The boy was fairly easy, Ryder Knox. Knox is my grandmother’s maiden name. One girl would be Ruby Lynn, Ruby was a name we’d always liked and Lynn for my mom. The other girl was much harder! We knew the middle name would be Carol for my MIL, but we were at a loss for a first. I liked Bronwyn, but hubby didn’t. We both liked Cora, but it didn’t work with our last name. Finally we went out to dinner, planning on nailing down a name that night. We had a very long wait for our take and ended up chatting with an older couple and explained our dilemma. The husband said, “what about Reagan? I’ve always thought that would make a nice name.” We both loved it, but that would mean all 3 triplets would have “R” names, something way too cutesy for my taste. Turns out we loved the name too much and I overcame by hesitations about them all matching and named her Reagan Carol. Thank goodness we’re done having kids so I never have to come up with names again! Too much pressure! 🙂

We just had twins and named the Paloma and Bentio. I’ve always loved the name Paloma and it’s meaning and Benito is for the great Mexican liberator Benito Juarez.

My first daughter’s name is Brinley Nicole. Our last name is Moore so I wanted to find a name that wasn’t so common. I came across Brinley on a baby name website and fell in love. It means burnt meadow or virtuous, princess depending on which website you visit. I liked the latter so it became her name and Nicole is my middle name. Unfortunately she was stillborn but she is still my first daughter.

My second daughter’s name is Ever (Nicole) Moore. I called her my lil bird all through pregnancy and her due date was close to Halloween. With our last name being Moore it seemed fitting that we play off of Edgar Allen Poe’s poem “The Raven” plus after losing our first baby I hoped that she would be with us for Ever Moore. Oh and she was born on Halloween so that solidified it for me.

My daughter is named after my husband’s Army battle buddy, Danny. Danny named his first born (son) after my husband, Kai. They both saved each other’s lives at one point during the war, so they decided to name their children after each other. My daughter’s name is spelled Dani. Her middle name is Rose. I’ve just always loved that name.

Both of our children have ended up with unusual names. Our son is called Joen James, Joen meaning gift from God. We found it online when we were deciding and both loved it. Since then have we been able to find the name…?!

Our daughter is called Neriah Grace. Neriah (ne-ree-ah) means burning lamp of God. A friends daughter when joining a convent in Germany was given the name and I’d always really liked it. I was unsure when deciding as its so unusual but as soon as she was put on my chest I was like this is Neriah 🙂

I named my daughter Isabella Josephine R. Because I’ve always loved the name isabella and Josephine is my husband’s grandmother’s name she was very ill when we had Bella so we used her name as as our daughters middle name unfortunately she passed before she could meet her

My husband and I too really love the name Paloma! We have three children so far and we decided to use saint names (first or middle) when picking our children’s names. We are Catholic so we really wanted to incorporate our faith into our children’s names. My oldest is Bradley Xavier (St. Francis Xavier, my husband’s confirmation name), Genevieve Eliza (St. Genevieve is the patron saint for Paris and natural disasters), and then we have Kateri Autumn. Kateri was born in October 2012 nine days (like a novena) after St. Kateri was canonized and that is why we named her Kateri. We are currently hoping for baby #4 and have already decided if we have boy he will be Ignatius Kolbe and if we have a girl, Philomena Paloma

I love the name Paloma Skye and that’s a great story how you came up with it.
My hubby and I had a daughter in November and we named her Ayla Rose. After many disagreements with names my husband found the name Ayla while searching the web. We fell in love with it! We both wanted a unique name that began with “A” because both my husband and I have “A” names. The middle name Rose we came up with because we love old- fashioned names, and when we first started dating he used to bring me roses all the time 🙂 I love reading all the stories on how other people came up with their baby names. I love that!! Our daughter is almost 1 and her name is Ariel Marie. I wanted something Biblical and less common for a girl. We were team green, so we had to come up with both boy and girl names. My biggest challenge was that because there are so few women named in the Bible, many of the names are super common (Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary, etc). My name was fairly popular when I was born and I always wished it’d been a little more unusual. I was flipping through a Biblical baby name site a few years ago (long before I was pregnant!) and saw Ariel. It is used in the prophets to refer to the city of Jerusalem and means “lioness of God”. I LOVE that and wish that for her. I told my husband he could pick any middle name he wanted if I got my #1 girl name, so he picked Marie which is his mother’s middle name. I never actually looked up the meaning of it until just now and apparently it’s not clear what it means… I’m going to go with “of the sea”. And yes, The Little Mermaid was my favorite disney movie growing up. That was just a side benefit. I’ve looked at her many times over the past year and wondered if we got it right, but when I look at her face and try out other names, they don’t work at all, so we must have! 🙂

My little girl is Kateri Elise (Kateri is pronounced Cuh-teer-ie). Before I met my husband, I taught a preschool Sunday School class and there was a girl in the class named Kateri. She was kind and smart, and she grew up to be a very kind big sister. I always thought that I would love to have a daughter like her some day.
Flash forward to years later when my now husband and I were dating. We were casually talking about the possibility of a future together and children. He told me that all his brothers and sisters had Catholic Saints names, and he’s like to keep that tradition. I told him that I loved the name Kateri and that if he wouldn’t budge on that, we just weren’t going to work out. Low and behold, he told me Kateri was actually a good Catholic name. I was surprised to find out that there was a Kateri Tekawitha, a Native American woman, who was actually venerated in the Catholic Church and who many thought would soon be named a Catholic Saint. She was canonized about a year before our Kateri was conceived.
When doing more research on the name, I found out that it is the Algonquin form of the name “Katherine”. This made me over the moon excited because two of the strongest and bravest women I know are both “Katherine Elizabeth”. So to honor them, we chose the middle name Elise, a diminutive of Elizabeth.
When I look at her now, I still can’t believe I have my own Kateri. The original Kateri in my life is now in middle school. I just love how this name kept coming back into our lives.

I also love hearing name stories, especially unique ones! We have 6 kids ( 3 boys & 3 girls ) all with lovely names (or so we think)…. Our eldest son with a family middle name of Ignacio; then began the trend of ” unique” middle names for our boys which are Ali and Ami
Main thing for our family is that we love keeping a theme of all “An” names for our girls, as that’s a family trend on both sides. So our girls are Angelica, Anaya, Anami, and + one due in May that we’re still working on!
P.S. Anami was a combo name of my name Ana and my husband’s middle name Miguel. Happy sharing!!

Very pretty name and awesome story behind it! My sons name is Raiden Theeo-Moon my brother came up with Raiden and I loved it! It means Thunder god he definitely lives up to it lol and Theeo is one of my best friends name means god like warrior and Moon because I love the moon plus it happens to be his planet Astrologicaly speaking. My daughter’s name is Odette Fae I got her first name from the Swan princess I always said if I had a girl I would name her that 🙂 and Fae as in fairy because I love Fairys and I have a feeling shes gonna be a crazy lil firesprite! Lol

My son’s name is Garyth David. We didn’t name him til he was born: we had three options (Garyth, Colin, and Luke). My favorite was Colin, but my husband really liked Garyth (the noblest of King Arthur’s knights). My husband got to spend time alone with the baby right after he was born while I was in surgery, and when I came back, he said “I think his name is Garyth.” After I’d spent a few hours with him, I agreed. It was like he told us his name. I can’t imagine him being anything else now. I picked the more unusual Welsh spelling (it is more common to see Gareth) because I love the way it looks, especially with our last name. David is after my dad, who died a few years before Garyth was born. We wanted him to have a connection with his grandfather.

We got our daughter’s name, Myka, from a tv show we used to watch. I had never heard that name for a girl and it just really stuck for some reason. Good thing too because she just didn’t feel like a “Gillian”, which I have said for years would be my first daughter’s name!

We named our #1 DS Edward Matthew- both are generational family names there is an Edward and a Matthew in all generations both sides and we couldn’t agree on a name we liked. So we went with “tradition” Our #2 DS is named Nicholas Alexander and we again fussed and argued over this until we finally came to an agreement originally Nicholas was going to be Benjamin BUT someone wrecked the name for me when I told them (I am not in the habit of sharing names for this reason, people are far less likely to be critical when they meet an already named baby) and also after that I knew I definitely did NOT want a biblical name for our children and will probably feel this way forever. But really, now.. I can’t imagine him being a Benjamin he just wouldn’t suit it. So there you have it- how we named our boys.

Paloma skye sure suits your girl Genevieve. 🙂

Jacqueline Talora came to be after two different changes of mind, but is very meaningful to us. My husband wanted a very specific meaning, and it was very hard to find a pretty, unique, feminine name starting with the meaning! We finally realized ‘we have to name her after Jackie!’ a dear friend and mentor to me – who we hope her to be like. Then we figured out that Jacqueline is the French feminine form of Jacob, who wrestled with God at the time of the night which was the biblical motif my husband was going for. It was perfect in every way and we hadn’t even known. Talora goes hand in hand with it and means ‘morning dew’ in Hebrew. Again, falling at the darkest part of the night just before dawn and often representing prayer.
We are expecting a little boy in a few weeks and are still not %100 on his name! I LOVE your story and it is awesome to read all the comments too 🙂

Love the reasoning behind her name! I also love Griffin’s name, too. We chose our children’s first names, mainly because they were the only one’s we agreed on ( Matthew and Charlotte ), but both of their middle names are named after family members.
You should definitely do a slideshow of all Paloma’s newborn pictures! I love the teeny tiny headband she’s wearing!

We named my first soon Ethan because my husband wanted a good, strong Hebrew name. Ethan, in Hebrew, means strength! We named our second son Micah because it was the only male Hebrew name we both agreed on! My third was supposed to be a girl and we loved Eliora (again Hebrew), but we found out at our twenty week ultrasound that this baby had no kidneys and would not live past birth. So my husband asked, in the off chance it’s a boy, could we name him Reuben (a name he loved but I hated and vetoed for our first two) so I told him yes. Low and behold, we had a boy! Reuben means, behold, a son. It was perfect. Then after we lost Reuben, we got pregnant with a girl and figured since we spent so much time praying for Eliora, it only made sense to make that her name!

Our oldest daughter is Gabriella Noelle. My husband wanted the kids to have a name that was strong, and as Gabriella is the feminine version of Gabriel, the archangel, he agreed. Noelle came from her being born right before Christmas, she is our Christmas angel!

I should also say that as my husband is Italian, all of our kids have one name that is Italian.

Our only boy is Dabid Giovanni. David because it is our favorite Bible character. It also has a good meaning. Giovanni because it was the name of a favorite restaurant when dating. It is Jonathan in English.

Next daughter is Liliana Grace. Liliana came to us from watching a movie and seeing this cute little girl actress who has the real life name of liliana. Grace because she is our gift from God after a pregnancy loss, and He spared her life and got her safely in a dangerous situation. After she was born I was sad that no one sent or brought flowers to me in the hospital. Here I was so excited about our little blessing and no one else seemed to notice. When we drove her home and pulled into our driveway there were Lilies blooming in our yard that were not there the day before! We had just moved to this house a few months before and no idea that would happen, and on her birthday no less. It was truly like God had sent me flowers for her birth.

Our baby is Chiara Elizabeth. Chiara means light and pure. She is our ray of sunshine! I got the name from a favorite movie. Elizabeth is another bible story that spoke to me while pregnant. We actually call her Ari. I felt weird at first, calling her Ari, thinking we made it up, but then I found it is a Hebrew word meaning lion!

Lovely story and especially with the dove at the window. Wow! When I first heard Paloma’s name I thought, Nice! Dove as a symbol of peace, and in the sky. You know, trying to fill in the blanks while I waited. 🙂 Oh, and thumbs up for romantic husband. Well done, Mike.

My son is August Cyriax. We call him Auggie. Two g’s, please. Husband and I, years and years ago (15?), in our early dating heard the name August and it thunk into place. It was just perfect. We spent years playing with it, imagining it, having fun with “if we have a kid” games, even before we knew we’d get married or decided to have children. When the time came that we knew we were having a boy we did due diligence & tried out other names. But August always rose to the top. It is so him and we have never looked back. Means, exalted, majestic. Cyriax is my grandmother’s maiden name. It’s French. I always thought it looked edgy with it’s y and x. It’s very fulfilling for me to feel right with the name we’ve given to a human being. Big responsibility.

If he were a girl a frontrunner for my husband at least, was Gypsy Olivia. Love Olivia, found out it was hitting its high point in popularity, switched it to a middle name and put Gypsy first. Gypsy was my dog’s name. I wasn’t super sold but it does sound great.

My daughter’s name is Paloma Marina. I named her Paloma because 1. I do have Latino heritage and I wanted my grandparents to be able to pronounce her name and 2. She was born during Pentecost so I wanted to reference the Holy Spirit. Marina is a combination of my Mom’s name, Mirna, and my aunt’s name, Maria. It was wven cooler when you consider that the Holy Spirit is like a river flowing from inside us!

Paloma Skye is an awesome name and an awesome story!

My son is Owen William. My hubby had mentioned the name Owen and I said, “Really? So you are suggesting we name him after my dad?” And my hubby was totally confused. My dad’s name is Owen Daniel, but most people don’t even know that because he goes by Dan. So my hubby inadvertently named our son after my dad and his middle name is my hubby’s middle name.

Our daughter is Oriana Marilynn. My husband and I had a couple of college classes with a girl named Oriana (went by Ori) and I just fell in love with the name. My middle name and my mom’s middle name is Lynn. I wanted to have that in my daughters middle name as well, but I thought just Lynn was too boring to go with a unique name like Oriana, so I smushed Lynn with Mary, which is my grandma’s name. Maria is also my MIL’s middle name, so I told her that was also a reason 🙂

Just read all the comments! Fascinating choices!

We have used Saints names/Family Names for our two boys.
Robert Anthony and Philip Joseph. My dad is Robert, goes by Bob, and my FIL is Russell Anthony, and we both love St. Anthony. Philip and Joseph are the names of my husband’s grandfathers, but, ironically, he was born on the 26th, as were both of my grandfathers! Pretty cool!

Robert and Philip complement the names of both our families in their style. Saints names that are simple and traditional! Between our two families, here are the names; Mary Ann, Joseph, John (my husband), Paul, Theresa, Thomas, Julia (my name) James, Mary, Peter, Grace, and then we each have siblings named Rose and Michael. 😀

We would like our first daughter to be named Maria, but also like names such as Veronica, Cecilia. Other boy names we’ve considered include Martin and David.

We didn’t find out the gender with either girl, so we made sure to have one of each picked out. Everyone told me that this was a boy (again)-but I knew better (I had girl dreams with both). It wasn’t until we were at my husband grandmother’s funeral that our daughter’s name came to me. His grandmother’s name was Audrey, and during the service, the name Sophia Audrey ‘popped’ in my head. After it was over, I said ‘I know this is an inappropriate time, but what about Sophia Audrey?’ I was only 2 months pregnant then, so who knew it would stick and that we would have another girl!? 🙂

Love your daughter’s name btw-Paloma was my Spanish name in high school, so I knew immediately what it meant!

Genevieve, I loved the name Paloma Skye when I heard that was the name you chose and I loved hearing this story of how it came to be. I am of both Spanish and Mexican heritage and it’s really a beautiful name. Instantly, I was reminded one of my favorite songs I liked to sing in my childhood: “Palomita de ojos Negros” covered by Linda Rondstadt. Our daughter is Erika Jayne. We were gonna call her Charlotte after my grandfather, Charlie…but when we went to our ultrasound, she was arse first at the camera and we didn’t feel the name Charlotte was fitting – she was too saucy! We got on a rant about how we didn’t want people to shorten her name at all, like everyone does with our names (Mat/Cee)…drives us nuts. And we liked the more Celtic/Old World spelling of Erika with a ‘K’ too. She was a NICU baby (born at 3lbs) so we wanted something strong sounding too…like Erik the Red!! Jayne came from my fave character in my fave series by Joss Whedon – Firefly – I find him strong, sarcastic and protective…just like my girl 🙂

I named my first son Christopher Robin because growing up my mother always read Winnie the Pooh to me (the old, old pre-Disney books) and I always said I’d name my first child Christopher Robin. Never occurred to me I might have a girl first! Lucky for him, he was a boy.

We named our son Croaley geffen . I liked the name Crosby but but husband didn’t. We liked surnames. We were watching a show on the history channel and heard the name Crosley (as a last name). We looked up the meaning And it means “cross in the meadow”. My name means “tower in the meadow”. We thought it paired well together. Geffen (also a surname) has been a name I love for years. It means “vine”. We liked how his name was always a reminder of Gods grace and promises to us.

I chose my oldest daughter’s name just because I loved it. It’s classic, sophisticated and mature. My youngest daughter’s name has more meaning as it was the title of a song that my husband sang to me when we started dating. Her name is classic, sophisticated and mature as well. For the middle names, I just chose what sounded best with the first names :o)

Well, I have 2 boys. My first is Cy Lincoln. My dad actually named him. We had dinner at their house one night, about 2 years before we got pregnant. At that time we were not even thinking about kids. We had only been married a couple years, and just wanted some more time together. After we found out we were having a boy Cy was the only name that stayed on the list. Plus our families love baseball, so it fit. And Lincoln is because we wanted him to share my husband initials, and we wanted a strong American name. My second is Satchel Lane. My mother in law named him. Satchel was named a couple years before we had him also, we just didn’t know it yet. My MIL liked that name when we were pregnant with our first. So when we found out we were having another boy, Satchel was the name that stuck. Which is also a baseball name. The funny thing is, I always said I would never do matchy or themed names. : ) Guess I was wrong. Land is after my husband. My husbands name is Casey and he was born in the 80’s, so I joke that we choose such unique names because there were like a million Casey’s his age.

I have two boys, George and Javier. I, however, come from a Mexican family, so many assume Javier, like George, is a family name. But that’s not how we came to name Javi, Javier.

My husband and I had a short list of revolving names. Javier was never on the list. We kind of got stuck with James because we felt it went well with the middle, which we had chosen well before we even knew he was a boy, and we both somehow felt that the letter J was calling us.

However, once he was born I said HE WAS NOT A JAMES! It wasn’t until my husband was holding him, that he said hello, Javier. The name just came out of his mouth. He looked at me and said, Javier, what about Javier. I fell in love with the name, my baby and my husband all over, all at once. I just knew it was right.

We have almost 3 children (our third is due in March). Our sons name is Elias Matthew. I really liked the name Elias and thought it was unique and we also really liked the meaning of his name Elias “Jehovah is God” Matthew “Gift of God” which is exactly what he is, a gift of God! Our second child is named Evelyn Primrose (we call her Evie). Evelyn was my grandmothers name and the women who helped shape my life but never got to meet her name sake. We also like the meaning “life” because she is so full of it! : ) and her middle name we just really liked! Our third baby is another girl due in March and we picked the name Eisley Petra. Now I am going to sound like a total nerd but we picked the name Eisley because it is from our favorite movie, Star Wars and Petra from our favorite book Enders Game. And I don’t know if you caught on but we ended up picking all E names completely by accident! If our third was going to be a boy we were going to name him Ender! I guess we just like E names! : )

I love Paloma! I pondered it for my baby, before we knew for sure the sex. My husband didn’t care for it…boo. Anyway, Hazel Jean was named after both of her Grandmothers. Samuel Allen, was named from 1 Samuel 1:27, and is indeed an answered prayer, Allen is his father’s middle name, as well as his Grandfather. Edith Corrine, was originally going to be Evangeline Lent, but a girl I knew named her daughter Evangelina, and I was peeved about it, so we decided on Edith, prosperous in war….as a Christian, we are always at war with evil, and Corrine is a form of Cora…my Great Grandmother’s name. If we have another girl, I’m at a loss. I have two boy names all picked out:)

For our oldest, my husband and I watched the movie The Prince and Me, with Julia Stiles. The butlers name was Soren, but we heard Zorryn. We found out what they were actually calling the butler and were like “we like Zorryn better!”
My middle child we were tossing around a bunch of names and Ryker was one of them. Zorryn started calling the baby “Baby Ryker” so it stuck.
Our 3rd, my husband really loves music. He writes his own lyrics and music. He wanted a musical name for our daughter. He came home from work one day and said “honey how bout Beaulyra, for beautiful lyric.” I was like “GAG” but I couldn’t tell him that (and he won’t read this so I can admit this). I went on line and searched “musical names for girls”. Cadence was a name I could get on board with!

We just had our first child in August – a girl we named Eva Heather. Heather is after her paternal grandmother, who had a stroke several years ago and is partially paralyzed. Eva we picked just because we liked it. Eva means ‘life’ and Heather means ‘sweetly scented or fragranced.’ Taken together we think is means ‘Life is sweet.’ 🙂

Our beautiful 2 year old daughter is named after my Mum – kinda. We wanted her to have her own identity, my mum passed away in 2003. Her name was Lilian. We named our daughter Lilly-Anne. Plus hubby’s mom’s name is Anne, so that worked out well 🙂 Lilly-Anne suits her though, its her name for sure! Her middle name is Genevieve. We really liked that name. So, as if giving her a hyphenated first name wasn’t torture enough, we gave her a middle name that kids won’t be able to spell 🙂

My son’s name is Artem Kayin and we call him “Arie.”

His name “Artem” was actually the one he came with! We adopted him when he was 2 1/2 from Moscow and we really wanted to keep his name both for his sake since he already knew it and because we wanted to have that Russian heritage represented in his name. We also had a divine moment because when we started our adoption we had concerns about his health and when we looked up his name it means, “of pure health.” That gave us so much assurance that God would give us the grace we needed to deal with any health issues.

We chose his middle name because it is derived from an African word that means “long awaited child.” The African part doesn’t mean anything to us, but we indeed waited a long time for him to come home! It was perfect.

And finally, we call him “Arie” because it is a Dutch name we both my husband and I have a Dutch heritage. IT was always one of my favorite boy names as I was growing up. Seemed like a suitable nickname for “Artem.”

Our boy is Sam Phoenix. We kept his first name short because our last name is quite long and a bit confusing. It took a while for the middle name, but when we both thought of Phoenix, it clicked. My husband and I met in Phoenix, AZ and that’s where our love grew. And I just love mythology and the image of the phoenix.

I wish I had some beautiful meaning to my sons name but the truth of the matter is that my husband is a HUGE comic book nerd and his favorite character is Wolverine. So from the second we knew we were pregnant he said if we have a boy he wants to name him Logan. Luckily for him Logan actually really grew on me and so now I have a little wolverine in my life. 🙂

Our first child is due any day now and my husband and I are naming here Kaley Ann. Kaley is the same origin as my husbands name Kelly and Ann is for my name. That way she has a piece of each of us. Also after we picked the name we really liked the meaning and personality traits of the name Kaley which are very similar to my personality.

Hudson because we loved it and Blaine after my best friend.

Indie because independence is a great quality and we thought it was a fun name we’d never heard before. Middle children need to stand a little right? Lol. And Lux because it means light. We had a loss before him and he was our light.

Silas because we loved the name, (our little Si-Guy!) and Rev after the drummer of my husband and I’s favorite band 🙂

My have a 1 year old named Caroline Ruth. Caroline is just a name my husband and I both love. My husband actually picked it out and I love that her daddy named her. Ruth is my husband’s grandmother who we are very close to. We wanted to use a family name for her middle name.

That great I’d never heard of Paloma before. I really wanted to name my oldest Gabriel Hawk. Hawks always seem to appear when I’m not being happy about something I should, like a reminder but I only just put this together. I was pretty scared when I got pregnant and had multiple dreams about hawks then one very vivid one about the angel Gabriel were he suggested the name Gabriel. My husband just didn’t like it at all so when he was born he just looked like a Luke (Lucas)and Alan is my FIL name. Still not totally satisfied with it and he’s 5. My second was more fun Vincent is a family surname with no male on that side to carry it (plus Van Gogh is a fav painter) and Dartagnan always been a favorite of mine I loved that it means victorious and warrior. But after my grandma insistence that VD was horrible initials we added my late MIL middle name Lee which was nice she pass a few weeks before I found out I was pregnant. So Vincent Lee Dartagnan.

Our first is Joshua Wade. Joshua is what my mother in law would have named the baby boy she lost when my husband was a little boy and Wade is my father in law and husband’s middle name. Our second is Autumn Michelle. We both love the season and just loved the name and Michelle is one of my sister’s middle names. She had just overcome a huge trial and we felt giving our daughter part of her name was special. Our third is Levi Michael. We loved the name Levi and it’s the name my husband’s sister would have named a son if she’d had one. Michael is my dad’s name. 🙂

Loved hearing the story behind her name! I’m all about the meaning behind names. We chose the name of our daughter, Claire Adele, because of the meanings. Claire means “pure amd bright” and Adele means “noble and kind.” Hoping her name will describe her character 😉

I love choosing baby names and hearing how others chose! We have three boys. We wanted Bible names, but unique ones. We have Eli Allen (Eli we just liked, Allen is his Dad’s middle name); Theophilus Ian (we call him Theo – Theophilus is who the books of Luke and Acts are addressed to, Ian is my Dad’s name); and John Amos (who we call Amos. We gave him the first name John after his Grampy, whose name is John Barry but went by Barry his whole life).
Meanings are important to us too. Eli Allen means “God is Exalted” and “Handsome,” Theophilus Ian means “Friend of God” and “God is Gracious,” and John Amos means “God is Gracious” and “God carries my burdens.”

My first daughter is named Tenley Marie because my husband and I met in Tenleytown, Washington, DC on Tenley Campus at American University! Marie is after her Great Grandmother. My second daughter is named Elsa Louise. My middle name is Elizabeth but neither my husband or I wanted to name her Elizabeth so I found Elsa and realized it was the German diminutive of Elizabeth. I have German heritage so it seemed perfect. Louise is after my Mother-in-Law. I love Palmoa Skye and think the story is wonderful 🙂

  I have an Elsa, too!! It was my grandmother’s middle name – she was Ingeborg Else Weckener. Anyway, we weren’t going to name her Ingeborg! Sorry, Omi! So we went with Elsa, and anglicized it so that it wouldn’t be mispronounced.
