You’ve heard about amber necklaces for babies, but they’re for adults too. Whether you’re considering one for fashion, to honor Baltic culture and tradition, or to experience potential health benefits, you might have questions about amber necklaces for adults. Do they really work? How do they work?! And where do I get one?
In this article, we’ll answer all of your questions about adult amber necklaces, including:
- Why would you wear an adult amber necklace?
- Are there benefits to wearing amber necklaces as an adult?
- How do I know if my amber necklace is genuine?
Why would you wear an adult amber necklace?
You’re probably already familiar with amber necklaces for teething babies, so why would an adult — who’s not teething — pick up an amber necklace? Apart from being a super cute accessory, amber necklaces provide pain relief for adults and babies alike.
Even though your body is equipped to handle occasional stress and pain, we sometimes need a boost. You might consider wearing an amber necklace to cash in on the benefits of amber necklaces. When amber beads are worn against your skin, the beads warm up and release a substance called succinic acid (which we’ll cover later in this article), and it’s this acid that provides pain-relieving benefits.
Are There Any Benefits to Wearing an Amber Necklace for Adults?
There’s no hard science on this just yet, but many people report that wearing amber jewelry does help ease inflammation and reduce pain associated with inflammatory conditions. Just as many people swear by wearing copper and/or magnetic bracelets to ease arthritis pain, the anecdotal stories of amber necklaces are growing.
Online sellers of amber point out some long-believed benefits, including controlling the pain associated with:
- Aching muscles and joints
Other benefits of Baltic amber include:
- Reduced inflammation
- Boosted immune system
- Reduced anxiety
- Reduced stress
- Reduced fatigue and weariness
- Aid in combating infections
Baltic amber and infections? Yes, the same amber used in your baby’s teething necklace is now being studied for its role in combating antibiotic-resistant infections. On April 15, 2021, the American Chemical Society held a press conference exploring the connection between the compounds in amber and its therapeutic effects. This is great news and supports what people in the Baltic nations (which includes Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and Sweden) have believed for hundreds of years! For hundreds of years, people who lived along the Baltic sea fashioned bracelets and necklaces made from amber stones that washed up onshore.

What is Baltic Amber’s Magic Ingredient?
Now that we’ve looked at the benefits of wearing Baltic amber, let’s take a look at the ingredient that contributes to these benefits: succinic acid. This acid is used to make medicine, perfume esters, and lacquers. It’s also found naturally in Baltic amber. Baltic amber contains as much as 8% succinic acid by weight.
Succinic acid is a powerful antioxidant that helps fight toxic free radicals, stimulates your neural system recovery, and boosts your immune system. Succinic acid also plays a role in compensating for depleted energy levels, which then helps to boost focus and reduce stress.
So How Exactly Does Succinic Acid Work in Adult Amber Necklaces?
You’ve got your amber necklace, but how do you take advantage of the succinic acid inside of it? You wear it! The secret is your body heat. When the beads are placed against your skin, your body heat warms up the Baltic amber, causing it to release oils that contain succinic acid. This magical acid is then absorbed through the skin and into your bloodstream.
But is it safe?
Yes! The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) deems succinic acid to be considered safe. They also note that succinic acid “occurs widely as a natural constituent of the plants and animals which are commonly used for human food.”
What to Look for in an Amber Necklace for Adults
Looking for a new amber necklace? They come in a variety of colors, including the same colors (black, dark amber, and light amber) as baby necklaces. However, adults will have more choices. Some jewelry makers will add other stones (such as amethyst) to the necklace, alternating amber beads with other stones and gems.
However, when it comes to evaluating the amber beads, look for Baltic amber that is GIA-certified, raw, and unpolished.
Is unpolished or “raw” amber better than polished amber?
We recommend raw, unpolished Baltic amber necklaces, whether you’re getting it for a teething baby or yourself. If the beads are polished, they might look shiny and nice, but the succinic acid can become sealed inside, making it less likely to provide therapeutic benefits.
Remember, all of the Baltic nations used raw, unpolished amber that washed ashore — just like how nature intended.

Where to Buy an Amber Necklace for Adults
We are super excited about these brand new, TRULY raw Baltic amber necklaces for adults. They are the only amber necklaces we know of that haven’t been treated with autoclave (more on that below).

But remember that not all “raw” amber teething necklaces are truly raw!
Have you ever heard of an autoclave? It’s a heating process that is often used to sterilize instruments in a dentist’s office. Some amber is also treated in an autoclave. While this makes the amber easier for the jeweler to work with (because it removes any bubbles or impurities in the gem), it disqualifies the amber from being truly raw.
This amber necklace has not been heated with an autoclave.

How to test your amber to make sure it’s genuine.
Most importantly, don’t buy an amber necklace if it’s not certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). This organization evaluates gemstones, and their GIA certification confirms the authenticity and quality of a gem.
To confirm you have purchased a necklace made of genuine Baltic amber, try one of these two tests:
- Place an amber bead against something hot. If you smell a hint of pine, it’s legit. This smell comes from the release of oils.
- Rub your necklace against a piece of cloth. If the cloth becomes static enough to pick up paper, then you likely have a real amber necklace.
How to Care for Your Amber Necklace for Adults
Caring for your amber necklace is much easier than caring for other precious gems and stones. Follow these steps to keep your necklace in good shape:
- Wash your necklace once a month with gentle soap.
- Allow your necklace to sun dry.
You can shower with your necklace on, but remove it before bathing in a pool.
Should You Buy an Adult Amber Necklace?
If you like the look of amber necklaces, why not? There are no studies linking amber necklaces to any negative side effects or reactions from the succinic acid.
