Birth Playlist And The Prayer Of Her Mother-In-Law Helped Julie During Her Natural Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I realized I was in labor around 12:30 AM. After narrowing our name list down from well over 30 to 7 potential baby names, my husband and I had just gone to bed about an hour earlier. I felt the baby's head drop lower and I knew something was different. I went to the restroom and there was bloody show already. I began to shake. Even though I knew better, I thought maybe this isn't the real thing. It was 11 days until my estimated due date. Within a few minutes, of all this happening the contractions began.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

This was my second labor and the most challenging thing about this one was how quickly it became intense. My first labor was 19 hours and I had time to really get into a rhythm and focus. With this labor it progressed much more quickly and intensely. I didn't feel as prepared for it all.

  • Graham-day
  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I had my birth playlist all prepared on my phone. On it was Mama Natural's birth meditations as well as some of my favorite Christian songs. I listened to the playlist while I was managing labor at home for a bit and in the car on the way to the hospital. It was quite helpful to have positive inspiring messages to focus on throughout this intense journey of childbirth.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I was very surprised by how quickly he came. From the first contraction I felt until his birth was only four and a half hours. It felt like such a whirlwind especially compared to my first birth with my daughter.

  • I just looked at my handsome little man is complete awe and I was in love! I was a beautiful overwhelming moment!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

I swayed a bit and sat on a birthing ball. Counter pressure on my lower back was also helpful during contractions. I think what helped the most was my birth playlist and the prayer my mother in law prayed for me before we left for the hospital. The playlist and prayer gave me a focal point outside of myself and the intensity.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

By the time I arrived at the hospital I was already feeling the urge to push. They rushed me to the birth room and had me get into the traditional C position in the birthing bed. I didn't have time to even request another position. Within around 4 pushing contractions he was delivered.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

We had chosen to be surprised by the gender at birth. So my husband leaned over and told me we had a son! I was in awe! I was convinced in my mind it was another little lady. I just looked at my handsome little man is complete awe and I was in love! I was a beautiful overwhelming moment!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

I think it it very helpful to have several different comfort techniques prepared for your labor. Each labor is so unique. Practice positions and comfort measures with your birth partner; gather some items that can provide a focal point for you. You don't know for sure what you will like in labor. It is nice to have options to turn to in the moment.
