Creating A Support System And Her Husband's Encouragement Helped Karri Achieve VBAC Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I had been having contractions on and off for a few days but I don’t think it really hit me until my water broke. Contractions were tough but I was working through them at home for hours until my water broke.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging thing was dealing with the contractions. They were pretty uncomfortable but my husband was helping by squeezing my hips which really helped. The contractions after my water broke were the worst but I made it through.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

The most helpful thing was creating a support system. I had an amazing doula but my husband was my rock. He kept encouraging me during labor and reminded me that a natural birth is what we both wanted. He also encouraged me to practice self care by seeing the chiropractor and getting prenatal massages weekly.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I was surprised at how fast my son was born! I labored at home until my water broke then we headed to the hospital. My water broke around 12:30 AM and he was born at 1:55 AM. We arrived at the hospital, I got into bed and 4 pushes later he was out! I felt so strong and empowered!

  • it’s important to decide on the type of birth you want and surround yourself with supportive people. Everybody is different so it’s important to find the things that work for you and your body! Practice self care and most importantly believe in yourself!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

The best thing was when my husband squeezed my hips together during contractions. I had other pain management techniques but that was the only one I really liked. I did stand in the shower for a while swaying which helped but as the contractions got closer together squeezing my hips was so helpful.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I ended up delivering on my right side. It was the most comfortable position at the time and I was able to stay focused but also relaxed.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

It was so amazing!! This was my first VBAC! My first delivery was a cesarean. When they put my son on my chest I was filled with so much joy and couldn’t help but cry. I felt so strong! We didn’t find out the gender until birth so I think that also added to the emotion and excitement.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

I would say if you are thinking you want to go natural, you can do it! Our bodies are more than capable of achieving a natural birth. I felt so worried about my second delivery because my first birth was so traumatic for me. But I think it’s important to decide on the type of birth you want and surround yourself with supportive people. Everybody is different so it’s important to find the things that work for you and your body! Practice self care and most importantly believe in yourself!
