Hiring A Doula And Reading Childbirth Books, Article And Blogs Helped Valerie During Her Natural Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

When I was admitted to the hospital measuring at 6 cm! I had been having contractions all day, but I thought it was prodromal labor. As soon as I got in bed that night they picked up in frequency and intensity. We decided to go to the hospital when they were coming about 4-5 minutes apart.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Going through transition and pushing was very painful, but having a doula and my husband for support was so helpful.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Hiring a doula and reading books, articles, and blogs about pregnancy and childbirth. I really recommend Ina May's Guide to Childbirth.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I was surprised at how long it took-28 hours! It also surprised me that pushing didn't exactly come naturally. I really had to consciously begin every push, but then my body took over and pushed harder than I ever thought I could.

  • Know that when you think you can't possibly get through one more contraction you're probably in transition and you're so close to meeting your baby!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

I mainly just breathed through the contractions, and moaned and groaned my way through transition.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I was on my back, and at that point I was so tired that I didn't think to try any other position.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

SO much relief that labor was over, and indescribable seeing her for the first time.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Know that when you think you can't possibly get through one more contraction you're probably in transition and you're so close to meeting your baby! Educate yourself on the process of labor, hire a doula, and know that your body was made to give birth!
