Hugging Her Husband And Swaying Helped Rebekah During Her Birth Center Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I had been having contractions for a week and a half, but it really picked up when my water broke at 12:35 the morning after my due date.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

After my water broke and the first (post water breaking) contraction hit, I was overwhelmed by the intensity of everything. It was a mental struggle at that point to imagine the potential of having to endure that for several more hours without any relief.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Reading and learning everything I possibly could. Keeping an optimistic, yet realistic perspective. Talking to others who were positive about natural childbirth. The last few weeks I was eating six fruit dates, taking evening primrose oil pills, drinking raspberry leaf tea, doing prenatal positioning exercises, and taking frequent walks with my husband.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

For me, it was how quickly it all happened. While I had experienced prodromal labor, my labor was about four hours from when my water broke to when I was holding my son. I had not expected that for my first time birth.

  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

The best strategy for me was hugging my husband and swaying. I also spent a lot of time rocking on the toilet (which we then switched to the birthing stool).

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    On all fours

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

There are no words. My husband caught our son and immediately lifted him to my chest. It was surreal that our son was finally here. He was warm and screaming. He was slimy. I had wondered if I would be slightly grossed out by that but I couldn't have cared less about the fluids and vernix. I kissed him and held him tight.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
