Birth Stories

Kate Was Committed to Having a Natural Birth in the Hospital

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I had been having prodromal labor for what seemed like ages, but while we were eating dinner the night before Elinor was born, I knew these contractions were different!

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Honestly, it was making the decision beforehand without ever having experienced labor before. Once I had made up my mind, altering the course never even occurred to me!

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I had the privilege of attending the (natural, home) birth of my niece the year before. Seeing the power and beauty of a woman bringing life into the world first-hand was so empowering!

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How LONG it was! I drank all the Red Raspberry Leaf tea, eaten all the dates, was in nearly the best shape of my life, and it was still so long! Babies sure do come in their own time ;)

  • I was surprised by how LONG the labor was! I drank all the Red Raspberry Leaf tea, eaten all the dates, was in nearly the best shape of my life, and it was still so long! Babies sure do come in their own time ;)
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Breathing to a rhythm. I had to have wireless monitors because baby was 41 weeks (hospital policy). I would listen to her heartbeat on the monitor and breath in time. It helped me feel close to her through even the hardest contractions.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

Semi-reclined and pulling against the birth bar.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Euphoric! I often daydream about how wonderful a feeling it was. She was so warm and slippery and absolutely perfect. I remember thinking the weight of her on my belly instead of in my belly felt very different!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Surround yourself with people who love you. If they love you, they'll respect your choices about your birth and support you with care and dignity.
