Birth Stories

Leslie Felt Her Natural Birth was Better Than Her Previous Medicated Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I woke up at midnight and was having contractions. Within an hour they were consistent and getting more intense so I knew it was the real deal!

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The unknown. I stayed at home for 4 hours working through the contractions without knowing if I was progressing and dilating, etc.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Research! I watched LOTS of videos. Genevieves videos as well as "The Business of Being Born" documentary were so inspiring. I also got my husband involved and on board which was crucial. He supported me entirely and kept me going.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

It was SO fast. My baby was born only 6 hours after I woke up with the contractions. And he was perfect. He latched instantly (which didn't happen with my first baby, who was induced and I had an epidural). It just really was so much easier to have a natural birth.

  • After having a medicated birth and then a non-medicated birth I am actually looking forward to another natural birth. It was one of the best moments of my life and such an uplifting experience.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

I used an exercise ball during contractions to lean against. It kept me from getting exhausted and was comforting. I walked around a lot between contractions as well. Then while pushing I just had to scream a little! But it was intermediate pain and it had purpose and I just kept telling myself it wouldn't last forever.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

At that point I kind of felt like a fish out of water and couldn't quite get comfortable. I plan to research birthing positions a little more in depth before delivering baby number 3 (due in March 2016). I was pretty much in a squatting position and just did what felt right. And the hospital staff was fine with that.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Amazing! Words can't describe that initial feeling. It's just so emotional and surreal the love you feel immediately.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Do it! You'll be glad you did. Set your mind to it and get a good support person to prepare with you and be there for you. After having a medicated birth and then a non-medicated birth I am actually looking forward to another natural birth. It was one of the best moments of my life and such an uplifting experience.
