Birth Stories

Natalie's Cesarean Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

Unfortunately I didn't get to that stage. I was advised to have a c-section at 35 weeks so we planned for this procedure.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Not being able to. It was heartbreaking being told a c section was the safest way to deliver my baby. I had to prioritize the health of my little girl. I felt like a failure and a cheater. All the months of reading and planning a natural birth felt like a waste.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Speak to people that had had c sections both planned and emergency. There's not much to read online about people's experiences! Otherwise my yoga class was brilliant with breathing techniques for labor and distraction.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How quick the c section was. First incision was 9:22 am and our beautiful Harriet was born at 9:28 am. The procedure was enjoyable and relaxed, the staff were sociable and made it a great experience. One even took photos for us on our phone!

  • Plan to and read up on techniques that support a natural birth. Choose what suites you and your mindset. However if you come across any obstacles and your told things aren't as you desired, stay relaxed, put your trust in medical staff...as long as your baby is here safely who cares how they are born. Enjoy the moment, don't fear birth embrace it as the best day of your life!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

I didn't need these. After the c-section I managed on just paracetamol and naproxen. I turned down offers of stronger and drowsy medicine as I didn't want to miss out on my daughters first hours.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    Laid back.....sun roof baby ?

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Amazing and surreal! We had skin to skin contact and I enjoyed staring at her stroking her face and looking into her eyes. She was trying to lift her head instantly.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
