Prenatal Aqua Aerobics and Hiring a Doula Helped Rachel During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

When they told me I was dilated to 7cm and were going to admit me! My contractions started Monday night, we went in late Tuesday a.m. when they were 5 mins apart, only to be told I was at 2cm and sent home. Once home, everything stopped. Feeling very discouraged, I eventually went to bed. I awoke later that night, after dreaming about being in labor, to much more intense contractions. When we went in that time, they kept us.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Not giving up! I was tired going in to labor. The pain wasn't as bad as I imagined, but I just felt like I couldn't do it anymore.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Prenatal aqua aerobics helped with my physical capabilities. However, hiring a doula was the best decision we could have made!!

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I read, planned and prepared, yet nothing went as I imagined (but it all turned out good, if not better than anticipated)

  • Build your support system ahead of time. While I read and studied birthing techniques and affirmations, it was my husband and doula that supported, encouraged and cheered me through the entire process.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

My doula was awesome in helping me breathe through contractions, encouraged sounds that kept my jaw open, and didn't shame me when I got really loud or went on a cussing streak. While laboring at home, the yoga ball, squatting, using a rebozo, and warm showers helped immensely. Also, I admit I did have a little bit of IV fentanyl before ever getting to the pushing stage.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

In the "traditional" on my back, although I asked at least once if there was another position we could try, as I really felt it wasn't working for me. Unfortunately, the doctor said no. (I was too tired to fight it, and was probably closer to delivery than I realized at the time)

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Surreal! He was so awake and alert. It was amazing! I just kept thinking "we did it."

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Build your support system ahead of time. While I read and studied birthing techniques and affirmations, it was my husband and doula that supported, encouraged and cheered me through the entire process.
