Preparing Mentally Helped Alie During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

    When my water broke while I was at home.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

    That as soon as I got to the hospital, the nurses wanted to induce me with Pitocin. Fortunately, the nurse that took care of me was kind and listened when I spoke with her regarding my concern at the time.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

    I was mentally determined to give birth naturally and did everything I could to prepare mentally for the best and worst experience. I asked other mothers about their experience and was eager to hear both the good and the ugly.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

    that I made it. I had my baby naturally. I also was surprised that once I started pushing, I didn't feel pain. I felt pressure but no pain.

  • Wonderful! Surreal! During my pregnancy, I always wondered what my baby looked like and when I saw my baby for the first time, I saw the face, lips, eyes, mouth, etc. my heart melted.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

    Breathing, back massage, hot wash cloths on my back, and a quiet room.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    Back, with legs raised.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

    Wonderful! Surreal! During my pregnancy, I always wondered what my baby looked like and when I saw my baby for the first time, I saw the face, lips, eyes, mouth, etc. my heart melted.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

    Prepare mentally. Read about natural birth. Take a class if you are able. If not, try to take a class online. Surround yourself with women who advocate natural birth.
