Reading And Learning Other Women's Experience In Natural Labor Helped Chelsea During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

At about 3:30 AM. The contractions were finally intense and not calming down like they had been previously during prodromal labor.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Probably not knowing exactly how long it would take to dilate to a 10, and once my water broke, how intense and non-stop the contractions were. In reality my labor this second time was fast but in my mind it felt like a really long time.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Reading about and hearing other women’s experience with natural labor. And learning to envision myself opening and giving birth to this baby.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

The sex of this baby was a surprise so it was a huge shock to see he was a boy when in fact I’d had a feeling he was a girl!

  • You are so strong and fully capable of natural childbirth if it’s what you want. Remind yourself that it’s pain with a purpose.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Focusing on breathing, reminding yourself that each contraction only lasts so long and then it’s over, and definitely counter pressure on the hips and back!

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    Laying on my left side.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

It felt amazing and so natural. I remember saying I was so happy about 50 times and remarking how good he smelled!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

You are so strong and fully capable of natural childbirth if it’s what you want. Remind yourself that it’s pain with a purpose.
