Which teething necklaces are best: amber teething necklaces or ones that moms wear? Read about the pros/cons of each variety to help baby find relief.

So you're desperate to give your teething baby some relief? Which teething necklaces are best-- amber teething necklaces or ones that moms wear? Here we'll discuss the pros/cons of each variety of teething necklaces to determine which are safest and most effective.

When baby is drooling, fussing, and unable to sleep from teething, you’re desperate to find something to soothe those sore and inflamed gums. There are many natural teething remedies you can try, but when the suffering persists, you may want to try teething necklaces to give your child some relief.

There are two main types of teething necklaces:

Here we’ll discuss both varieties of teething necklaces to determine which necklaces are safest and most effective.

Baltic Amber Teething Necklace Review

The teething necklace that baby wears is usually referred to as the Baltic amber teething necklace. (Sometimes, other therapeutic stones or hazelwood are used in combination with Baltic amber. But amber is truly the star player in soothing gums.) It’s not meant to be chewed on or put into the mouth at all—it’s supposed to soothe pain by releasing succinic acid– naturally present in the Baltic Amber– when heated by the body’s temperature. The succinic aid is then absorbed through baby’s skin and thought to offer a soothing, analgesic affect.

Do amber teething necklaces work?

Depending on who you ask, the answer is a strong yes, no, or maybe so. There isn’t much research out there that supports no refutes the idea that succinic acid passes from the amber beads into the skin in amounts that can cause an analgesic effect.

The only study available is a study performed on mice, which showed that succinic acid helped relieve stress and the temperature rise associated with that stress.

Babies and toddlers often get fevers as they are cutting a tooth, so it would make sense that succinic acid could help that pain and stress as well. But obviously, there is much work to be done in order to definitively say whether amber teething necklaces work or not.

Though science hasn’t supported the claim yet, ancient wisdom has touted amber as a healing gemstone for centuries.

“Amber has long been used in folk medicine for its purported healing properties. Amber and extracts were used from the time of Hippocrates in ancient Greece for a wide variety of treatments through the Middle Ages and up until the early twentieth century. (Source)

And let’s not forget the many, many mamas who have sworn that these necklaces were the only thing that helped their child find relief from the teething discomfort that kept everyone up at night.

An easy way to make sure your baby gets the most potential benefit from an amber teething necklace is to choose real (and raw!) Baltic amber teething necklaces. Those made from other materials have little or no succinic acid and cannot help soothe teething pain.

Are amber teething necklaces safe?

There’s plenty of debate on this topic as well. Obviously putting a necklace around a baby or toddler’s neck is not without risk, but high-quality brands of amber teething necklaces will contain important safety features like a breakaway clasp and knotting between beads.

Teething necklaces, or any necklace for that matter, are meant to be worn only when an adult is supervising child. You want to always remove from child when she/he is sleeping or on long car trips.

So which Baltic amber teething necklaces are best?

Though there are many fake necklaces, made from everything from plastic to glass to copal (a younger version of amber), Mama Natural sources true, untreated and RAW Baltic amber—straight from the Baltic region!—for our teething necklaces. These amber teething necklaces are the only ones we know of that haven’t been treated with autoclave, a method of heating the amber that alters the quality.

Our favorite is this rainbow-colored version, which is double-knotted for durability, made with unpolished amber, and features a safe pop clasp.

Mom Teething Necklace Review

Another type of teething necklace is the kind baby can chew on, but putting a necklace on your baby or toddler that is long enough to reach her mouth is obviously unsafe, so these necklaces are meant for mom to wear instead.

The idea is that baby can climb into mom’s lap and find some relief from teething pain by chewing on her necklace. They’re made of a number of natural materials that are safe for baby to chew on and come in many styles that are attractive and fun for mom to add to her wardrobe.

The major benefit to a mom teething necklace over a teething toy, is that they don’t fall on the ground and get dirty or lost. They also act as a toy to fiddle with during nursing too!

Do mom teething necklaces work?

These kind of teething necklaces work as well as any teething toy does. The texture and firmness of the beads helps baby soothe irritated gums. You can even place them in the freezer, just as you would a teething toy.

Are mom teething necklaces safe?

Mom teething necklaces are typically a safe choice for your baby, but you do need consider:

  1. The material it’s made from: Untreated wood, food-grade silicone, and natural rubber are some of the better materials for teething necklaces. Stay away from plastic, even if it says BPA-free, as BPA is only one of the chemicals in plastic that can be problematic. Teethers made of PVC also include phthalates.
  2. The necklace string: Is it meant to break away when it’s tugged too hard? Are the beads secured well? Are there any frayed parts that look like they may be ready to break?
  3. Where it’s made: Toys and necklaces made in China may contain lead or phthalates.

So which mom teething necklaces are best?

This necklace can be thrown into the dishwasher to clean and can also be thrown into the freezer to give baby a cold treat for her inflamed gums. It’s adjustable and has a breakaway clasp.

Barvinok Teething Necklace

This handmade necklace has both wooden and crocheted beads to give baby different choices for texture and firmness. It’s organic and made from only natural materials. This necklace is both functional and an attractive addition to your outfit.

Which Type of Teething Necklace Should You Choose?

The two kinds of teething necklaces in this teething necklace review work in very different ways:

  • Baltic amber teething necklaces work by releasing succinic acid, which is absorbed through baby’s skin and acts as an analgesic.
  • Mom teething necklaces are simply teething toys that go around mom’s neck for baby to gnaw and chew on. They can be a wonderful choice if your child is clingy or if you’re concerned about baby dropping the teether.

Though some people wonder whether amber teething necklaces are dangerous, they are the only type of teething necklace that may offer real, lasting relief. And with proper fit and supervision, you can minimize the risks.

For those babies and toddlers who have mild teething pain, a mom teething necklace may be all you need. For those little ones who have intense teething discomfort, you may want to try an amber teething necklace to give her some relief… and help everyone get some rest. Plus, they look adorable on!
