I love the week before New Year’s. It’s quiet. It’s restful. And it’s a great time to reflect on all of the blessings of the year. For our family, it included good health, exciting work on our upcoming book, and my kids starting at an awesome Montessori school, which they’re loving.
It also had its challenges… like navigating a new community and missing old friends and family. As I reflect, I realize that I need to take more active steps to create my new “family” down here in Florida.
But of course, what I really love about this time of the year is dreaming about things to come. I have several things I want to focus on this year and thought I’d share with you. I’d love to hear your resolutions too!
1.) Eat more veggies
I eat pretty clean with no refined sugars or gluten but I want to include more veggies in my diet in the New Year.
Traditional cultures ate much more plant varieties than we do today; and some of the healthiest populations eat significant quantities of vegetables.
I find that veggie preparation can take the most work, so they can often fall to the waste side when I’m in a rush!
Not this year.
Just like I take time to soak my grains or nuts/seeds, I am going to create the time to prepare my veggies.
I’ve started juicing more and will be making vegetable feasts from this book. I love cooking Mediterranean dishes too, which rely heavily on veggies, legumes and spices. And, yes, I will still eat animal protein and fat, just with more veggies 🙂
2.) Do affirmations and declarations
If you’ve been around these parts for awhile, you know that I’m a huge fan of affirmations.
Years ago, I thought affirmations were a little woo woo and didn’t actually work.
But while I was pregnant with my second child Paloma I did affirmations and visualizations, and her birth was truly JOYFUL and, yes, EASY.
I’m such a believer in affirmations now that we created:
Now, if affirmations work during pregnancy, they’ve gotta work for the rest of our lives too, right?
The truth is, the thoughts we fill our mind with and the words that come from our lips have POWER.
The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. – Proverbs 18:21
Talk about conviction! What we say has the power for life or death… Wow! So, this year, I’m flooding my mind, soul and spirit with positive words and affirmations. I have been reciting Scripture daily and am reading all sorts of books on this topic. A friend of mine also recommended this Declarations book, which includes 30 days of powerful devotions and declarations, which I’ll study during the month of January. (The author, btw, has an awesome and free list of declarations that you can recite here.)
I also like to soak to affirming music to connect with God and my spirit. Already, I’m noticing that I’m happier, more hopeful and more loving. YAY!
3.) Do strength training 3 times a week
I was finally able to lose the last 8-10 pounds of baby weight doing Trim Healthy Mama. (If you haven’t checked them out and need to lose weight, their program really works!)
Now, I want to focus on firming up and strengthening my muscles.
Thankfully, cardio isn’t that hard for me to fit in because of our treadmill desk. I also love to go for walks or bike rides with the kids. But, I have a harder time getting strength training workouts in.
Papa Natural doesn’t. So, I’m going to hitch a ride with him and do some type of strength training with Michael, three times a week. This can include Pilates, weights, or other isometric exercises.
4.) Practice daily detox
Because we’re bombarded with toxins from the foods we eat, to the chemicals in our furniture, to the pollutants in the atmosphere, I think it’s so important to find gentle ways to detox daily to keep our vitality strong.
One of the most powerful ways to do this is through sauna therapy. I believe we were created in Light so it makes sense that we can heal with the presence of light! That’s why I love my NEAR infrared sauna because you can actually see the healing red light.
Furthermore, NASA confirmed that near infrared light penetrates the body up to 9 inches deep, in contrast with far infrared light, which only reaches about 1.5 inches into the body.
Here’s info on what I think is the best infrared sauna.
And here’s more info on far vs. near infrared saunas.
I also will include my daily detox salad as well as my liver love brew as part of my 2017 routine, not to mention some turmeric paste :). Probiotic rich foods like raw kefir, sauerkraut and these awesome “gut shots” are also helpful for daily detoxification support.
I use my Young Living essential oils daily. Here’s how I like to use them…
- I diffuse cleansing oils like Frankincense, Rosemary and Eucalyptus
- I add a drop or two of antioxidant-rich Orange, Grapefruit and Lemon essential oils into my morning smoothie.
- I use Coriander, Ginger and Peppermint essential oils to support digestion and healthy elimination
- I take a daily shot of Ningxia Red too to support my overall wellness and immunity.
You can learn more about essential oils here.
5.) Take some cool trips
We live in a small town, so we allocate a good chunk of our annual budget to travel so the kids can see DIVERSITY in thought, race, culture, economics, and lifestyle.
We also just really love to travel as a family, especially in the summer to get out of the steamy Florida heat! (Griffin, btw, would be on the road 24/7 if he could as he loves meeting new people and seeing new places.)
We just learned that Michael’s mom is taking his brother’s family and ours on a weeklong Mediterranean cruise this summer! And now we’re thinking we’ll extend the trip by a week or two and see a bit of Spain. Pretty amazing, right?
We’ve also got a few short trips planned for 2017 too.
6.) Launch a book!
Our new book, The Mama Natural Week-to-Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth is releasing on April 25, 2017!
I’m so excited to “birth” this book into the world, as I believe it can help all the mamas out there who are seeking a more natural approach to childbirth.
We are planning out our book launch now, and are excited to offer some amazing bonuses for you when you pre-order the book.
We will even create a Book Launch Team to help spread the word. Members of the launch team will get a free copy of the book and more! Click here if you’d like to be part of the launch team.
7.) Create more helpful resources for mamas
Our goal at Mama Natural is to be the best-in-class resource for moms who want a natural pregnancy, birth, and parenting style.
We plan on building out a free “Baby’s First Year” email / txt series for natural ways to deal with things like fevers, teething, colic, sleep issues and more. This will complement our current Natural Pregnancy Week-to-Week curriculum and Natural Childbirth Education Course.
We also want to create “bump clubs” for pregnant moms, all moderated by doulas, so that natural moms with similar due dates can support one another throughout their pregnancy and postpartum experience.
We’re also going to step up our article output in the new year.
Would love to hear what else you’d like to see from Mama Natural too!
