Healthy Holiday Treat Recipes: Candy Cane Men & Peppermint Trees

When you live in Mama Natural’s home, Christmas cookies just may be lactation ones; fudge is often dates; and soda is kombucha.

Healthy is just the way we roll

But I do let loose a little bit around Christmas and let my kids have more treats than usual… I just try to make them healthy holiday treats. In that same spirit, I put together a couple of gummy recipes.

You know how I love the gelatin treats… whether they’re pumpkins or stars. After all, gelatin is a wonderful anti-inflammatory protein that aids digestion and is great for healthy blood sugar levels.

These treats are made with Vital Proteins gelatin

Vital Proteins collagenI used their collagen protein – the green can. This is the kind of gelatin that “gels.” The other type of gelatin, collagen peptides, is the kind that blends in with cold or hot things and does not gel. It’s great for smoothies, in yogurt or even tea.

We’ve worked with Vital Proteins many times now because their products come from pasture-raised cattle. Plus, it’s the smoothest gelatin on the market. I also like that you get free shipping when you order off their site!

Candy Cane Gummy Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1½ cup of red juice (think cherry, pomegranate, and if you can find healthy fruit punch 🙂 )
  • 1 ½ cup of coconut milk (where to buy)
  • 8 TB Vital Proteins gelatin, divided (where to buy)
  • ½ cup light honey or 120 drops liquid stevia (or sweeten to taste), divided
  • Holiday gummy mold (where to buy)

Directions:
Pour your chilled coconut milk into a sauce pan and add 4 TB of gelatin. Mix well until it’s dissolved. (If there are still a few clumps left, don’t worry as these will dissolve when you apply heat.) Turn on the stove to low-medium heat and warm juice until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Add your sweetener and let the mixture gently simmer for a few minutes.

Pour your concoction into a Pyrex pouring cup or bowl and let the mixture slightly cool off. The liquid should still be warm when you pour into your mold so that it doesn’t start to gel in your measuring bowl! Fill your molds halfway with the coconut milk mixture. Set aside.

Clean your sauce pan and then pour your cold juice into a sauce pan and add 4 TB of gelatin.

Pour your concoction into a clean Pyrex pouring cup or bowl and let the mixture slightly cool. You want this to be slightly warm… skin temperature (not too warm or it will melt your coconut milk layer). Carefully pour your juice/gelatin on top of your coconut milk to fill the molds. Set aside until your gellies have set so you can transfer mold to your refrigerator. Let them set for about an hour and then carefully pop out of mold and put into an airtight glass container. Store in the fridge and they should last at least 7 days.

Peppermint Trees Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cup organic, grass-fed and preferably raw cream
  • ¼ cup of honey or 60 drops of liquid stevia
  • ¼ cup of Vital Proteins gelatin (where to buy)
  • 2-3 drops Peppermint essential oil (where to buy)
  • Holiday gummy mold (where to buy)

Directions:
Pour your chilled cream into a sauce pan and add your gelatin.

Add your Peppermint essential oil. 1. I’m wondering about the sugar content in all that juice! What could be a substitute? Would some sort of fermentation (where the sugar content is eaten up by the “grains”) be an option??? Let’s put our heads together and make this work for those on ketogenic diets!! THANKS!!

  2. Just so everyone knows – gelatin is from cow bones.

    • Yes and I have a food sensitivity to gelatin so I can’t have bone broth, which is so incredibly good for you!

  3. Are these more like jello or gummy snacks? My son loves gummy snacks but not a fan of jello…

  4. The code isn’t working today (the 22nd). Does it expire today or tomorrow?

    • Sorry, the code was good *up to* Dec 22 🙁

  5. I love the double layers! Is it okay to ingest the peppermint oil?

  6. Great recipes! You know what? I adapted the Peppermint Trees one after reading Grace’s comment above. I used coconut milk (canned Natural Value BPA free) in place of cream and 1 tsp (or maybe more?) of vanilla in place of the mint oil, since we don’t have any mint oil. These little trees and stars came out great! Thanks for the post, and for letting us know about Vital Proteins gelatin. I got some the other week using your discount code and have been enjoying making homemade jello and other new recipes. 🙂

  7. Where can I find this in the Netherlands?? Shipping costs are way more than the purchase! :/

Maybe there is something similar over here!

    Thanks for the recipes!!!

  8. I just ordered a blue and green container! Thanks for the coupon! I am excited to put the protein in tummies and smoothies for my family 🙂

  9. Sorry, I didn’t received your free guide 🙁

    • Okay, emailing you now with the link 🙂

  10. Great ideas! I just ordered my vital proteins. I’m super excited to try it out for yummy holiday gummies 🙂

  11. Do you think you could substitute the peppermint in the tree recipe for vanilla, to create a creamy vanilla version? Love this!
