    News Flash: Babies Cry

What happened to your sleepy newborn? He’s growing up, mama! As a result, you may notice baby becoming more fussy, agitated, and moody (welcome to the human race!).

Crying can be a result of being hungry, tired, wet, or even bored. Try rocking, feeding, swaddling, babywearing, or singing songs to your little one. Be on the lookout for signs of colic, as this can cause extreme fussiness in newborns. But do know that sometimes babies just need to cry and be held. It will pass. (Learn how to decode baby's cries.)

    Baby Skin Conditions

Around this time, you may start to notice pimples and whiteheads popping up on baby’s face. Don't worry—this very common skin condition affects more than 30 percent of newborns. Although it should clear on its own in a matter of months, you can try these natural remedies for baby acne to help speed things along.

Baby eczema and cradle cap are also very common right about now. But luckily, there are some great natural remedies for both skin conditions. With a little TLC, your newborn's skin will be super smooth in no time.

    Baby Grasp

In more exciting news, you may start to see some big changes in physical development now. Baby is working hard on figuring out her hands, fingers, arms, and legs. At this point, baby may grasp your finger or other objects for a brief period of time. Her muscles are growing stronger and stronger every day!

Last tip: If you want to bottle fed occasionally, now is the time to introduce a bottle. My lactation consultant recommended feeding baby a bottle 1-2 times per week starting at 4 to 5 weeks. This timing helps baby be more willing to accept the bottle, but prevents nipple confusion. Trust me, I waited too long to give Faith a bottle—she wouldn’t accept one! (These are the best bottles for breastfed babies.)

You’re probably noticing the lack of sleep is starting to catch up to you. Don’t worry, mama. Things will settle down soon. In the meantime, try these strategies to get your newborn to sleep.

Some families find co-sleeping is an easier way to manage baby throughout the night. While it may not be for everyone, here are some thoughts on why some families choose to co-sleep, and whether it’s safe.

Swaddling your little one can also help baby sleep in longer stretches. Swaddling gives baby a sense of comfort, and reduces the involuntary movements of the arms and legs that sometimes can startle her awake.

With all of the excitement of becoming a new mama, the lack of sleep can definitely takes its toll. Stick with it mama, trust your instincts, and know that more sleep will come in the future!

Mom! Mom! Can You Hear Me, Mom?

Baby Week to Week 4 Mama Natural Mom Mom Can You Hear Me Mom

Naomi may look like a little angel here… just wait until 5 p.m. rolls around…

The dreaded “witching hour”—those early evening hours when baby is all kinds of fussy—started when Naomi was about four weeks old. It was like a switch flipped every night at 5 p.m. Naomi would get very cranky and cry and cry and cry. She’d cry so hard we had to use closed captioning to follow anything on TV! Bouncing, rocking, an extra feeding… nothing seemed to work. It was all tears all the time for our little one.

Then the pastor’s wife—a seasoned mom with five young children—recommended cluster feeding in the evenings. It was like a gift from above! Sure, it wasn’t the easiest solution for mama. Sore nipples, exhaustion, constant latching and unlatching—talk about a marathon! But, low and behold, it cut the crying down by at least half.

Though cluster feeding helped manage the fussiness, becoming dairy-free finally eliminated the problem. Once I got the willpower to cut all dairy out of my diet, the evening hours were finally ours again, and best of all, my precious baby finally got some much-needed relief. — Brittany
