40 Weeks Pregnant

What’s up with baby’s “cone-head” look at birth? And when do most mamas actually give birth (relative to their due date)?

YIPPEE! You’ve reached the “end” of your pregnancy! (Although, for many mamas, it ain’t over yet!)

Fortunately, Baby Natural’s still probably at the same stats as last week: 7 to 9 pounds in weight, and 18 to 22 inches in length.

Baby’s bones are mostly cartilage, and the bones in the skull are not yet fused—perfect to move and compress a bit when Baby Natural makes his grand entrance.

In fact, the bones in the skull can overlap and cause “molding” at birth—more commonly known as cone-headedness. Don’t worry, that pointy head look is only temporary. (And, I gotta say, even though we were mentally prepared for this, my hubs and I were still pretty shocked when our baby Griffin looked like something out of the movie Alien.)

When he is born, baby will recognize your voice and probably your partner’s too. But baby won’t be able to get a terribly good look at you. At birth, baby can really only make out lights, shapes, and movement. But by one month, he will be able to focus on things 8 to 10 inches away—in other words, the perfect distance to a parent’s face. ❤️

If you’re like 1 in 20 moms, you will give birth on your due date.

Yep, your likelihood of delivering right on the date is 4%, according to data from the Perinatal Institute.

Whereas 60% of babies are born within a week on either side of their due date. And more than 90% are born within 2 weeks on either side of their due date.

In fact, you are statistically most likely to give birth 1 week and 1 day after your due date if you are a first-time mom.

Get the theme here? “Due date” isn't really the greatest term for what’s going on here. “Guess” date is a little more like it!
