Valentine's Day Gift Ideas for Natural Papas, Mamas & Kiddos

Some people think Valentine’s Day is a commercial scam made up by the florists, jewelers, and candy manufacturers—but I love it.

Of course, we should be celebrating those we love every day, but when our lives are so often go-go-go, why not take some time out to be more mindful about recognizing those special people?!

I recently heard about a really thoughtful idea to extend the love…

Beginning on February 1, leave little “love notes” for your partner or kids to find throughout the house. Use sticky notes to scatter one meaningful message each day, including:

  • I love you
  • I’m proud of your strength
  • It amazes me how kind you are
  • Thanks for being you!
  • And so on…

More Valentine’s Day activities for the family

1. You can also make homemade Valentine’s together and mail them to family and friends. Simple construction paper, some markers and stickers will do the trick. Or these vintage ones are adorable!

2. My family also loves to bake Valentine’s Day cookies using healthy flours and sugars. We used these heart cut outs so we could create all sort of sizes for varying appetites.

3. For breakfast, Griffin and I like to make this healthy nutella recipe and enjoy on toast.

4. Another big winner? Making homemade, non-toxic play dough and spending time together shaping fun creations.

5. Before the kids hit the hay for the night, spend some quality time as a family reading a thematic book. Depending on who resonates with your child, there are several great books out there with a Valentine’s Day theme from Pete the CatElmoCurious George and MickeyThis book for babies looks so cute too!

6. And if you want to share some classic Valentines Day videos, there’s always Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown.

Treats are always in demand, too

There’s almost no getting around all the sweets floating around on Valentine’s Day, which is why I like to make sure I have some better choices on hand. These items are great for special treats for your own kids or for pairing with Valentine’s Day cards for the class.

Of course, you can always gift your valentine a little something special…

I usually get my honey—and my little honey bees—a little something extra for Valentine’s Day, too. Here are some Valentine’s Day gift ideas that I like that may inspire you, too.

Free Valentine’s Day Gifts for Your Partner

1. Rather than go to a pricey prix fixe dinner (and book a babysitter!), cook up your honey’s favorite meal and eat over candlelight. Or, if you have a creative side, write a poem to your love (or use this silly love poem generator).

2. I also like to make “Cutie Coupons” for Mike. This is a little colorful book full of “coupons” that he can redeem for things like a back massage, an afternoon off from the kids, breakfast in bed, etc.

3. Of course, the best gift of all is quality time. And our spouses need QT with us just like our kids do. So consider blocking out some time, grab a sitter if need be, and just be together.

  1. My DD is probably getting a Hello Kitty Mylar balloon from her daddy. Are there any alternatives to helium, tho? I know it leaks and the balloon has the potential to ‘pop’ and release the gas in kids’ faces. You should do a party alternatives blog! Thanks for all you do, Gen! 🙂

  2. Awesome your husband would need an afternoon off from the kids. You are blessed.

  3. I’ve been following you since we found out we were pregnant with our first and you with your second. Our EDDs were about one week apart and we delivered about two weeks apart. Needless to say, your blog has been very relevant in my life. There have been sooo many times I’ve wanted to say “me too” or “I totally needed to hear that right now”. I couldn’t help but laugh that your husband first said “I love you” on Feb 14, 2006. WOW…me too! I’m sure there are many more just like me who feel that sense of sisterhood and community with you that you may or may not ever meet. Thanks for continuing to share your story.

    • Oh my goodness, how wild is that?!? (2-14-06 was a good day!) Your message totally made my day 🙂 Thanks for taking time to write. XOXO

  4. I love this list! I’m going to show the list to my husband, maybe he’ll get the hint! P.S. I’m one of your biggest fans!

  5. Cool list :O) my daughter loves the Where’s baby’s… books. We have the Halloween one (among others) & yhe Valentine one is probably adorable too.

  6. Thanks to you, I’m getting my boyfriend a rebounder! He’s always had trouble with his knees, so I think it’ll be a good alternative to his usual evening jog. Besides, I think he’ll be a kid at heart until his dying day, and what’s more fun than a trampoline?

    • AWESOME! He’ll love it! I try to bounce daily 🙂 even if it’s just a few minutes.

  7. There is also IPhone app (What to get my boyfriend) for that, its very nice. It asks you questions about relationship and his character,,in the end it gives you suggestions, of course you can set the budget and also his birthday reminder. Its cute and useful, I am sure they have bunch of small cheep unusual gift ideas and they as well have DIY ideas.
