Taking The Birth Class Through Their Birthing Center Helped Meagan During Her Birth Center Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I thought my water was leaking but it was a Sunday and I didn’t want to call the birth center as I had already gone in for a false alarm a few weeks before. Several hours and a few pH strips later I decided I should call the midwife. My water had broken but I wasn’t having any contractions. Some castor oil, quality time with a breast pump, and a few hours later I was finally having contractions and knew I was in labor!

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The transition was definitely the hardest part! I know it’s supposed to be the shortest part, but it felt like it lasted forever! After being up for over 24 hours, I was ready to call it quits!

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I think taking the birth class through our birthing center was most helpful!

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How good it felt to push! Also that no matter how much you plan and prepare things don’t always go as planned. I may have had the delivery I wanted but, we had a big scare after I delivered Nora and ended up at the hospital.

  • It’s going to hurt, but it’s doable and the pain just means you’re closer to seeing and holding your amazing baby!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

I used a tens unit that helped a lot for my back labor to begin with. The tub was the only place I could “relax” towards the end. I even dozed off for few seconds between contractions.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I delivered on a birthing stool as recommended by my midwife. It was super helpful to have the sides to hold on to while pushing and I could see the mirror/my baby which helped to motivate my pushing.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

It was amazing/a relief. She had to be resuscitated after delivery so holding my crying sweet girl was the most incredible feeling.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

It’s going to hurt, but it’s doable and the pain just means you’re closer to seeing and holding your amazing baby!
