Birth Stories

Bethany Gains Strength For Her Third Natural Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I had my first contraction had 8:00 A.M. I knew it was real labor at 9:30 A.M.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

For me it was the the intensity of the pain and knowing the only way to stop it is to give birth! And its only going to get worse until the baby is out.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I read about other natural labor and deliveries. I read about the many generations of women before me who gave birth and found strength in their stories. I also compared this birth (my 3rd) to my first two and knew I lived through those so I would live through this one as well!

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How fast it was!!! My first contraction was at 8:00 A.M and he was in my arms at 11:36 A.M. I was only at the hospital 36 minutes and I was holding my baby!! Also, I was surprised at the break I had in between contractions while I was pushing. It didn't take very many pushes ( 4 I think?) but in between I was so calm and at peace. It was a great experience.

  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

I have to be honest I didn't really use any of the pain management strategies I had read about during this pregnancy. I forgot everything I had read and I Just did what felt natural. I would breathe really heavy or moan or yell through contractions. Yelling at the end of a contraction or a push has helped me in all 3 of my labors.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

My first two deliveries I delivered on my back with my feet in stirrups. But this time I delivered on all fours on the bed. I LOVED this position. In my opinion so much better than on my back.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Amazing. Incredible. Beautiful. This was my third baby and it was all still as incredible as my first!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

    You can do it!!!
