Grayson Name Meaning

A trendy name with plenty of room to grow, Grayson means “son of the steward.” Originally an English surname, Grayson has gone on to become a playground regular with his boyish charm.

Grayson trails the similarly styled Mason, though both follow the path cleared by Jason in the 1980s. He also has a number of alternative spellings like Greyson, Graysen, and more, so his popularity is higher than one might think. Despite this, he’s modern and fresh, a standout choice from the usual William or John.

Grayson fits in well with the color boom we’ve seen in recent years with the rise of Blue, Gray, and Indigo as first names. Many parents enjoy the nickname of Gray with the anchor of a longer more distinguished name like Grayson.

A name brimming with boyish wonder, Grayson is right at home on a little boy. He’s bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to take on imaginary foes with the grace of a knight. He’s strong-willed and persistent, occasionally bending the rules to sneak in an extra game of tag. He’s today’s Ryan or Brandon, gradually molding into the boy next door name of this generation.

Similar names include Brody, Beckett, and Tyler. The name has also crossed gender lines, appearing on top girl name charts as well.

  1. My husband chose this name. We both love comics and our favorite sidekick turned hero was none other than Robin a.k.a. Dick Grayson.

  2. Bc it’s a cute name

    Nun
    No

  3. It’s interesting that so many people are saying it’s unique. I think it’s overused. There are three under four in my extended family.

  4. I thought it was relatively unique and gets well with familial middle name

  5. We had it as the boy name for our first but didn’t use it. When we found out we were having a boy for our second we explored all of our options, but it still just sounded right. I also read somewhere that it means son of Greg and that is my husbands name. We also like names that aren’t very common but also aren’t way out there.

  6. I choose this name because of my sister she liked the name so I picked it

  7. It was slightly different. Felt like a strong name. Sounded good with our last name as well as the family middle name we picked, James.

  8. I named him Grayson John because we lost my grandma and I wanted to honor her so I went with Grayson John because her initals were GJ. She was Gail Joan and Grayson John just worked. I fell in love with the name. He is 7 months old and very active lol. He loves Mickey mouse clubhouse. Sorry so many comments but he keeps grabbing my phone and hitting things lol.

  9. I wanted an old school name. So I wrote down a list of them and my boyfriend read them off. Grayson was the only one my little boy responded to and when he came out, he totally looked like a Grayson

  10. I just fell in love with the name Grayson and its unique ?

  11. When my husband and I met, we met on Facebook, his user name was Gray Wolf. We were big into role play back then. He still calls himself Gray every now and then. So we named our son Grayson (literally son of Gray) Curtis. After my husband and my dad (Curtis is my dad’s middle name).

  12. My lil guy got his name because I lost my grandma 2 years ago. Her name was Gail Joan. I wanted to honor her so I went with Grayson John. GJ! He has her first 2 initials and she always loved names like AJ or CJ. I wish she could be here to see her first great grandson.

  13. We call him “Gray” – we wanted something not too traditional, but not too far outside the norm either. We wish now that we had just named him Gray, since older family + school tend to default to Grayson. We hadn’t heard it used often, but now we know a few Graysons. We still love it!
