Making A Plan For The Care Of Her Toddler Gave Katie Peace Of Mind During Her Birth Center Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I had been experiencing prodromal labor for about two weeks and had learned to not get too excited about frequent contractions. This morning, the contractions felt stronger but weren’t falling into a regular pattern. When I found myself in tears needing to reach out to the midwife for support I realized maybe I was further along than I thought!

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Dealing with two weeks of prodromal labor made me consider trying to induce. Fortunately, my experience of hurrying along my first birth (membrane sweep, pumping, black cohosh) and having to deal with a really difficult presentation that made me realize he hadn’t been quite ready, helped me maintain patience.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Making a plan for the care of my toddler helped give me the peace of mind to fully engage in my labor and birth.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How present I was! My first birth was so challenging and I was very turned inward. Throughout this birth, I was so convinced I wasn’t in full labor yet that I remained very relaxed and present. It was such a wonderful experience.

  • Our thoughts have so much power over our bodies. If you are anxious, or afraid, or focused on something else your body will hold back.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

While laboring at home, I distracted myself by decorating the Christmas tree and playing with my toddler. Once I felt labor turn, I put on headphones, had my toddler leave the room, and listened to birth affirmations. This made a huge difference in the progression of my labor. She was born less than two hours later!

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

Lying down in bed. I was so surprised that this felt most natural and comfortable for me!

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

I felt so proud of both of us for working together to create such a smooth birth.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Our thoughts have so much power over our bodies. If you are anxious, or afraid, or focused on something else (for me, it was my toddler) your body will hold back. Focus on mantras and affirmations to help keep your thoughts positive and focused.
