Lucy Name Meaning

What’s not to love about Lucy? An English name meaning “of the light,” Lucy is a vintage stunner with endless appeal.

A shortened form of Lucille and Lucia, little Lucy is an adorable name full of pizzazz. She’s sassier than the similar Leah and Lily but just as sweet, sharing her name with the lovable title character in I Love Lucy. She’s wonderfully light and airy, never too refined for a laugh or round of fun. She’s also relaxed, free from the confines of formality and able to be whoever she wants to be. She isn’t dictated by centuries or history or traditions, instead setting out on her own to make the most of life.

Lucy was a baby name favorite in the early 20th century before falling out of favor in the late 1960s. When she came back around in the 2000s, she returned with a vengeance, quickly climbing back into the Top 100.

She’s been a literary love for years with appearances in The Chronicles of Narnia and Villette. Soft in sound and eternally youthful, it’s no surprise that authors love Lucy. She’s also a saintly name with Saint Lucy being the patron saint of the blind and writers.

Lucy has some surprisingly cute nicknames despite her tiny size from the lovely Lulu to the chic CeCe.

  1. I love my name so much
    I am light

    • I’m the fourth of five Lucy’s born in my family. I was named after my mom’s aunt and oldest sister. That was an honor to pass the name through generations.
I’m very honored to have been given the name and love it .

  2. It’s my mom’s name, so her grandma and grandchild share the same name

  3. We chose Lucy for a few reasons. The main one being that it was the only girl name my husband and I could agree on!
We also loved the meaning of Light proclaimed over our child. We both have histories of depression and darkness and really wanted to speak over this child that she would break those chains and live in light.
A third reason is because of a family name of Lucente which also means light. We thought it would be special to continue the precious name on in the family in our own way.

  4. We chose Lucy because my husband and I both loved the Narnia books growing up! Lucy was our favorite character; she had spunk, loved her family, and stood up for what was right. The name felt classic and sweet. We love that Lucy rhymes with plenty of words so we can write and sing her silly songs with her name in them!

  5. My husband and I really wanted to name our daughter something that felt classic, but also “cute”. Lucy was always a top contender and when we finally decided that would be her name, we watched a movie that night and one of the little girls names was Lucy. Took that as a sign from God that we made the right decision! We love our little Lulu!

    • I feel happy and loved that parents named Lucy a very precious name i love it with passion

  6. I Soo much thank God for my name Lucy I love and cherish it when I checked the meaning and my date of birth 7/3 I came to realize that I’m a very special person, I’m a bringer of light, I pray God’s light will continue shining in my life Amen ?

    • I love my name Lucy which means light and pray to God that the light should continue shining in my life and in the world
      AMEN

      • I love the name Lucy, it has brought light to me

  7. I Soo much thank God for my name Lucy I love and cherish it when I checked the meaning and my date of birth 7/3 I came to realize that I’m a very special person

  8. Luc?a is the tittle of my favorite song of a songrwriter named Joan Manuel Serrat, he is from Barcelona like my husband. St Luc?a is a very important spot in my hometown, in fact, my city was founded nearby a natural pool of water called “Eyes of Saint Lucia“.
Since the very begining of my pregnancy, that name had been haunting me. It felt like “Luc?a” was everywhere…
Even before we knew we were expecting a baby girl, Luc?a was the first and only name that pop into our minds.
I like the short version of Luc?a= Lucy, it sounds very sweet. Also, Luc?a comes from a Latin word meaning “light.” And that’s exactly what our daughter has brought into our lives: Light, clarity and a lot of love.

  9. I love my name. I know nobody else with my name. I am 13 and many people have told me they like my name because it is pretty and beautiful. I love my name so much

    • i love my name so much i even named my pet cat it but it started to get cheeky so i sadly got rid of it. rest in peace lucy. i thank god for my name because he gave me a reason to live unlike my cat

  10. We just thought it was a cute name and our 2 year old daughter loved it

  11. When I saw the name I knew it was hers. It’s so sweet and simple and reminds me of my favorite tv show “I Love Lucy”.

    • I love my name because of it’s meaning light

  12. She is our little girl! We had 3 boys before her and we really wanted a little girl, we had some trouble agreeing on a name because we knew it would be the only girl we got to name and it had to go with all our other son’s names. (Gabriel, Oliver and Logan) We chose the middle name Scarlet because it was our second choice.

    • So weird, we have 3 boys older and now a Lucy and our oldest sons name is Gabriel and also our second choice was Scarlett!!!!

  13. We chose this name simply because it’s adorable. But also because it’s classic and goes well with our other kid’s names. Which are Molly, Caroline and Anna

  14. I think the name is so cute and I don’t know anybody else with it it’s also a little bit older

  15. I personally am so glad i was named Lucy. I have loved my name all my life and i hope i carry the meaning of it forever.

  16. We liked St Lucy and her story.

  17. We wanted to chose a name based on meaning. Lucy means light and we want our girl to be a light in this world. She has already made our lives so bright in the few short days she has been here!

  18. Lucy was my great grandmothers name and she was a very special lady in my life.

  19. We love the name!

  20. We first chose it to honor a family member; we gravitated towards the meaning (light) and the fact that it was classic and had a universal appeal. Our other children are Miles and Amelia and we thought Lucy sounded great with those names as well.

  21. I chose the name Lucy after my grandmother. Lucy is my 3rd child, but I miscarried during my second pregnancy and after my miscarriage I would always dream of my grandma Lucy and throughout my pregnancy, so when I found out I was pregnant again we decided her name would be Lucy.

  22. It wasn’t on the list but as soon as we heard it (and realised we finally found one we agreed on) we just knew it was the name for our baby.

  23. We loved “L” names for girls and how simple and classic Lucy was.

  24. My husband always wanted a daughter named Lucille.

  25. Lucy it means light and I want her to be in the light , I wanted her to love the light of the world ! I chose it for the meaning and my desire that my kids will have a love for God.
