Birth Stories

Taking a Birthing Class Helped Rachel During Her Home Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I woke up at 2am and my contractions started out being 2-3 mins apart. The contractions continued to get more and more painful.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging thing going natural was breathing through the pain and not getting tense with each contraction.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

The most helpful thing was taking a birthing class.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

What surprised me the most was that I could do it on my own in my home with two midwives.

  • Breathe through your labor. Your body was built for this and its not as scary as everyone makes it to be. Have a birth plan and have a support team with you to encourage you and help with getting the birth you want.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

The best thing I did for pain relief was breathing through the contractions from lungs to baby.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

My water broke while standing and from past deliveries I knew the baby was going to be here really soon. So we rushed to bed and delivered on the edge of the bed on my back.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

The feeling of holding my over due baby was relief and joy. Was so happy holding my little baby.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

My advice is that you can do it. Breathe through your labor. Your body was built for this and its not as scary as everyone makes it to be. Have a birth plan and have a support team with you to encourage you and help with getting the birth you want.
