Learning to Relax and Breathing Through Painful Contractions Helped Lindsey During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I was ten days past due and induced due to a significant drop in amniotic fluid. Originally I was planning to give birth in the birth center but due to needing pitocin I was switched to the hospital side to give birth in. Thankfully my midwife came with me and presided over the birth.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

I chose to have no pain relief with pitocin. Labor was much much harder than with my first. The contractions were nearly unbearable. After close to five hours of really difficult labor I asked my midwife to check me as I was ready to throw in the towel. I was only 7 cm dilated. I was gutted. She told me to give a big push so I did and I broke my own water and immediately dilated fully! I met my daughter five minutes later!!

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Learning to relax and breathe through painful contractions.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

With my first pushing was my least favorite part. This time pushing was a breeze! One big push and my 9lb 4oz baby shot right out!! Didn't even hurt.

  • You are stronger than you may believe. Each birth is different so find what works best in the moment even if it's not what you "planned".
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Changing positions really helped. I laid over a birthing ball for a while. I was on all fours for a while. Ended up sitting in a chair for quite a while (never would have thought to do that but my husband was encouraging me to find the best position so I kept trying different ones.)

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I ended up in a semi lay back squat. I went from my midwife checking me, breaking my own water to immediately needing to push. Literally I had no time to move!

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

    Best thing ever.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

You are stronger than you may believe. Each birth is different so find what works best in the moment even if it's not what you "planned".
