Mila Name Meaning

Short and sweet, Mila is a Slavic name that first appeared on the U.S. baby name charts in 2006. A diminutive of names containing the root mil, Mila means dear or gracious.

Parents are head over heels in love with Mila’s effortlessly chic style, a tiny name bursting with femininity. She’s not as frilly as Isabella or Delilah but she’s just as soft and delicate. She’s also spunky and adventurous, playing well with Aria and Mia, two other pint-sized girl monikers.

Mila started turning heads internationally with the rise of actress Mila Kunis, a star with a diverse portfolio and likable personality. The name is fun and friendly, much like chart climbers Lily and Chloe. She also has the trendy -la syllable as seen in Layla and Ella.

Mila ages gracefully and avoids falling into the trap of sounding trendy or juvenile. Mila’s exotic roots also make her a stylish choice for parents looking to explore foreign names that easily cross over into English. She’s refreshing on the ear and stands apart from Emily and Amelia, but her similar sound ushers in a nostalgic feel that parents can’t help but love.

Longer variants of the name are Milena, Milka, and Mylene. Male versions include Milos and Milan.

  8. My husband picked this name for our daughter. He wanted Mila, and I wanted Grace. I thought Gracie would be the sweetest nickname to call her. When she was born we knew she was meant to be Mila. It’s short, a bit sassy and fits her perfectly. We landed on Mila Grace in the end. We call her Mimi as a nickname. It fits her so well. I love the name Mila. I wish it wasn’t popular from a selfish standpoint but it’s so beautiful I don’t mind! Lol.

    • grace is a name for loserts ngl

  9. Different! Means the union of states in Hebrew and Apples in Greek. While I was pregnant with her I went to Greece and we loved that name even more ?

  10. Husband and I were going through names and we both just liked it and kept coming back to it. We originally considered giving her a more complete name (Milena, Mileena, Kamila) and simply using Mila as the nickname, but we couldn’t agree on the full name. We decided to just make our final decision when we saw her, and decided just Mila was best. Overall I like the name, but it does sometimes still feel incomplete and I sometimes wish we’d chosen a fuller name. I also don’t like how popular a name “Mila” is currently. We’ve already had quite a few people tell us that’s their daughter’s or niece’s name, and she’s only three weeks old!

  11. Milaya in Russian is sweet, dear, honey and I knew I would call her Milaya. Mila was perfect fit for that reason. It stood out and we kept coming back to it. On top of that it was a modern name of one in family so all came together nicely.

  12. My name is Mila, and I love it! ? I understand it could be mispronounced, but nobody has ever mispronounced it when talking to me.

    • OMG YOU HAVE MY NAME IM NOT THE ONLY HERE NAMED MILA 😀

  13. I think this is a beautiful name but people could mistake the pronunciation.

  14. I had Mila as one of the top names on my list in early pregnancy and my husband and I both really liked it. Towards the end we knew that would be her name.

  16. I heard the name Mila Rose while watching tv and just fell in love with it. I just think it flows and sounds beautiful and it’s not a very common name.

  17. We chose it because it was short and sweet, feminine and feel that it won’t get mispronounced all that much.

    • My name is Mila, and I love it, but people mispronounce it all the time, so I wouldn’t choose Mila because you think it won’t get mispronounced.

      • my name is mila and I love it

  18. My husband is British and I am German. We were looking for a name that we can pronounce in the same way in both languages. Once we saw the name Mila, we immediately fell in love with it.

  19. I think the name Mila is a beautiful name. And different for a child of African American heritage

  20. We wanted a name that was sweet and short because we knew she would have two middle names, one of which is hyphenated. We thought the name sounded really sweet, and it was one of the few mom and dad both loved. To top it off, the meaning roots are: dear, darling, gracious and pleasant! My name root meaning is dear one, I loved that!

  21. My paternal grandmother’s name was Milagros and we called her Lola (grandma in Tagalog) Mila. Since I was in college, I wanted the chance to name a daughter Mila, but I am one of 17 grandchildren, so I feared one of my cousins would use the name. Luckily, no one did and I now have my baby Mila 🙂 Her middle name is Clare. My husband’s maternal grandfather’s name was Clarendon and he went by Clare. That’s how we came up with our daughter’s name.
