Reading, Talking to Others And Addressing Any Fears Helped Olivia Achieve Her First Home Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I realized I was in labor three hours before my baby was born. I thought the contractions were just Braxton Hicks until three hours before pushing time began--nope, this was the real deal!

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The fear of not being able to survive the pain. But, breathing, encouragement, and warm water were huge avenues to get past the pain.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Read! I read everything I could get my hands on, and then some. I don't think you can ever be to prepared so I read books covering topics of birth, labor, natural pain relief, and breastfeeding. Reading gave me a realistic view of what to expect from labor and birth and how to prepare myself.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How quick it was. I expected a long, drawn out labor for my first. Instead I got a four hour labor...that started in the middle of a family party.

  • Prepare, by reading, talking to others and addressing any fears or issues you have ahead of time.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Water, water, water! It made all of the difference in my labor.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    In a semi squatting position.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Amazing and surreal. I couldn't believe he was finally here!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Prepare, by reading, talking to others and addressing any fears or issues you have ahead of time. Most importantly find a support person or doula--these people are priceless and can help you gain that extra ounce of strength when you don't feel like you have any left. Encouragement is amazing during birth!!!
