Birth Stories

Staying Active Helped Sarah During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I had prodromal labor for a week, with some moments of pretty intense contractions. When I was finally in true labor we tried everything that had stopped the contractions earlier in the week (the tub, a drive, bouncing on my labor ball). They didn't stop this time so we figured it was finally the real thing!

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Transition was really intense. I think it was the only time I thought that pain control would be nice. But at that point I knew I was so close.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Staying active! Being in good physical shape was a huge help during labor.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

It was longer than I expected (19 hours), but didn't feel that long. Again, I think my level of fitness helped with endurance.

  • Your body was made for this. Stay active, squat a lot, and give perineal massage a try. ;)
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Moving as much as possible and changing things up often. I rotated between the tub, the ball, and walking the halls. Having a focus verse that encouraged me to lean on God's strength rather than my own, knowing He designed my body to do this.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    Squatting!

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

It was the best feeling in the world!!!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Your body was made for this. Stay active, squat a lot, and give perineal massage a try. ;)
