Emily Name Meaning

Mighty Emily is steadfast throughout history, bestowed upon literary figures and forward thinkers alike. Emily isn’t one to sit on the sidelines, always readily willing to lend a helping hand or offer a solution. She’s an artist, a saint, and a hard worker at heart, as seen in her meaning “industrious.”

Derived from the Latin aemulari, to emulate, Emily’s popularity has risen steadily over time thanks to her sweet sound and precious nicknames from the classic Em and Emma to the delicate Emmy. Emily has the desirable -lee ending commonly found in popular names like Lily and Paisley as well as the traditional appeal of the more formal Elizabeth and Victoria. Emily also avoids the juvenile feel found in some names ending with -ee.

Emily may be sweet but she’s no pushover. Emily is founded on strength and propels herself forward with her determination. She’s not afraid to move mountains or roll up her sleeves if it means achieving her goal. At the same time, she’s no stranger to enjoying evening tea or meandering the shops with friends. She’s versatile and wearable on a girl at any age.

Variants of Emily include Emma and Emilia. Classic names like Emily are Katherine and Rebecca while soft choices like Lucy or Ruby have a similar charm.

  1. Hello Dear Mamas,
I am so excited to be a mommy of a beautiful baby girl born on Feb 16, 2021. My name is Ammy, yes with double “m” but my mom since a baby has called me “Amy.” Meaning everyone pronounces my name as “amy” so I want it a name that would rhyme with my name and I always have love Emily. For my baby’s middle name I chose Eliana. My mom’s name is Eliuth and my mother’s in-law name’s ends in “ana” so I put the two names together. It was super special when I google Eliana’s meaning and found out that it means “my God answered me.” My husband and I got pregnant after 13 months of trying so Eliana was perfect!! Much love to all of you and may God continue to bless you in your motherhood journey. <3

  2. We love Emily because it’s cute name , also because my husband is Italiano , and I’m Indonesian so it’s like “international name” ?easy to pronounce for both of us and the families.

It’s my middle name and we both have always loved classic, timeless names that will carry her well through life with any profession. Her middle name is Marie, which is my mother in law’s middle name. My husband liked the idea of combining names from both the main ladies in his life into the newest lady 🙂

  6. When I was a little girl I would always watch the cartoon Clifford the big red dog and I like the name Emily Elizabeth so when I found out that I was pregnant and the baby was a girl I knew what her name was gonna be

  7. I’ve always like the name Emily and the softer sound works well with our last name which has a stronger sound.

  8. It was very difficult to find a name…i tried the yelling it out or saying it outloud and that seemed to have eliminate a whole bunch of options…
But, with the name Emily..it just felt right. I dont know of any Emilys in my life and all that came to mind was a baby sitting up with a wobbly head but managing or a baby running looking like they are about to eat shit but then dont…and me yelling …”Emily….come here Emily” and thats how i knew that would b her name.

  9. It’s a name I’ve always loved and is very simple and classic.

  10. I loved the olivia pregnacy app and i know ILL love THIS app as well

  11. ???Emily???

  12. We had actually liked her name with my previous pregnancy(Wyatt). When we found out this time it was a girl, I kept coming back to it. Then her daddy tells me it was actually the name his brother wanted for his little girl. He only had boys? So he called his brother , told him our delima and to my shock he was happy to let us name her Emily. Said it would be an honour. ?

  13. The name emily is simple and we love the shortness of it

  14. Well Her Dad Named Her Emily Just Not It For Me But Now Within The Year . She Grew To Look Like A Emily Her Name Fits Her Now I Love Love Love it ?

  15. I love the name and I love her even more

  16. We chose the name Emily because we wanted 3 things; short, simple and not easily made fun of (ie no weird nicknames).

  17. I wanted a short classic name that can’t have a nickname. The name Emily tops charts for most common Doctor and Lawyer names. Name means industrious/striving…hopefully she will grow to be a hard worker.

  18. When my husband and I were dating, we chose two names, one for a boy and one for a girl. We loved the names so much, they eventually became our first two children’s names. The only thing I do not like about the name Emily, is that it is so very popular. I guess that is for a reason, though, because it is so beautiful!

  19. Emily means hardworking and our prayer is that Emily will be a hardworking woman of God someday.
Her middle name is Anne, which means prayer.

Together her name means hardworking prayer and it took a LOT of prayers to get her here. We almost lost her at 21 weeks. We also hope that she will understand the full power of prayer.

She is also named for both of our mom’s moms.
