Birth Stories

Susie's Hospital VBAC Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I was induced to avoid a repeat c-section. My OB was willing to give me my trial of labor on my terms with an induction because I was overdue.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Pitocin! I was given pitocin for 27 of my 31 hours in labor. I didn't have normal contractions in my stomach, I felt all of the pain in my hip joints. I was determined to have a VBAC this time. Last time I did natural as well...46 hours of pitocin ending in a c-section.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Spinning babies during pregnancy to have optimal fetal positioning during labor. We also used the Bradley Method again. We had a great supportive birthing team this time! My husband, a great OB, a fantastic doula, and supportive nurses!

  • What surprised you about your birth?

When he actually came out! I'd seen it happen... but never experienced it myself.

  • Take one contraction at a time. Hire a doula! Listen to your gut...push back if needed and only do what you are comfortable with.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Ice packs in my hips. Just getting into the most comfortable position and getting my whole body to relax and breath through it. Take one contraction at a time.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

Sitting upright in the bed with one foot up on the birthing bar.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

    Elated! Accomplished!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Take one contraction at a time. Hire a doula! Listen to your gut...push back if needed and only do what you are comfortable with.
