Elizabeth Name Meaning

Noble and timeless, regal and divine, Elizabeth is a classic in every sense of the word. She’s transcended time through royalty and commoners alike, sprinkling her magic across the centuries.

Elizabeth is the epitome of elegance, sauntering down red carpets and sitting atop thrones throughout history. She’s a head turner wherever she goes, easily recognizable as one of the most popular female names in history. Her usage isn’t limited to English either, with variants like Elisabet and Elspeth appearing worldwide.

A little Elizabeth is distinguished and proud, a mighty name resting on a little baby ready to take on the world. Elizabeth holds her head high, proud of herself and her accomplishments. She’s the sister of Victoria and Katherine with her flair for all things fabulous evident a mile away. Don’t be fooled by her class however, as little Elizabeth isn’t one to shy away from splashing in puddles after a fresh rain. She’s sugar, spice, and everything nice as well as a pinch of playful.

Elizabeth, while gorgeous on her own, also boasts a ton of nickname potential. There’s the fashionable Eliza and the vintage Betty. There’s also the sweet Ellie and Bethie. Diminutives include Elsie and Betsy as well as the more formal Elsa and Isabel.

  1. Elizabeth is my first favorite girl’s name when I was at the wee little age of 3. It didn’t seem like the right name until this baby. She also goes by Elle. And Nickname of Dragon.
Elizabeth to Lizzy (nope) to Lizard (nope) to Dragon ? Yup!!

  2. My husband always loved the name Elizabeth. Her mother’s name was Anne Elizabeth ” Annabeth ” and she passed away when my husband was only 3.
He wanted to name his lovely future daughter Elizabeth.
When I got pregnant, he suggested the name Elizabeth for our baby.
Honestly I didn’t like it, it’s too old fashioned. But my husband always adores me, respects me and he’s so wisdom and he’s the true Gentleman.
So we named our daughter Elizabeth Annelise Leah.
Her nickname is of course Lilibet / Lilibeth 🙂

  3. Elizabeth Vivienne was named after my Maternal Grandmother (Elizabeth) and Vivienne is just a beautiful name I’ve always admired. I love how much of a variety she has for nicknames too. We call her EV, but the possibilities are endless!

    • name is eilzabeth

  4. It was my cousin’s middle name

    • This is dumb

    • elzabth grace

  5. I wanted a strong feminine name that had lots of options for nicknames. My work colleague and I nicknamed her Liza during my pregnancy because she kicked me constantly, she has a dancers spirit. ?

    • What a quinky dink! my mother was called elizabeth and she had a bit of a dancers spirit, as she always kicked me constantly. unfortuatley she passed 8th september this year and we went to her funeral on the19th september, she was a very popular women because she loved to dance, her hands eventually turned purple to all the moves she used to do, it wouldn’t surprise me if shes still dancing in her grave now.
i aspire to be like Elizabeth and so should everyone else.

  6. We decided to name her after my sister who fought adrenocortical carcinoma the last 1 1/2 years, and she passed away 15 days before our little baby Lizzie was born.
Middle name – Simieanne after my bff who is an amazing friend and who has helped me during the last 4 out of 5 births I’ve had! It’s her first and middle name put together as one, and carries the same meaning as Simeon.

  7. We feel that Elizabeth is a strong and classic name. We also like the fact that it can be shortened to many nicknames. We are going to call her Elizabeth and allow her to choose what she goes by when she is older.

  8. My husband heard the name given to him by the Lord. We didn’t know what gender we were having initially so we held that name and when she came out we immediately knew that was her name.

  9. She is beautiful

  10. We agreed on it! That alone is almost enough! 😉 We both thought this name was elegant, versatile and had an old-fashioned feel. We love all the nicknames that can come from it and incidentally her exact name: Elizabeth Rose ? is the name of my mother in laws favorite grandmother. ?

  11. Family name

  12. Elizabeth Faith 🙂

  13. We chose the name so it could be passed down in our family. I’ll be going by Elizabeth and our baby will go by a nickname such as Liz or Lizzie.

  14. My husband liked the name and I did too. She is named after several ancestors,
    Elizabeth Karen Barbara Lisa.

  15. Elizabeth is the middle name of my late sister who is 18 months older than me. Wanted to honor her without using her first name. We are thinking Elly for short.

  16. I named her after my grandmother who passed away in late 2019.

  17. I love this name! I want to name my first daughter Elizabeth, I like the nicknames Betty, Lili, Lizzie, Libby, or Ellie. She would be named after my paternal great-grandmother and grandmother, and my maternal aunt. It’s also my middle name. Her middle name would be MaryJeanne after my mother, Mary, and my maternal great-grandmother and grandmother.
Barbara JEAN + Bobbie ANNE = JEANNE.
Reply with your thoughts on the name please! I’d like feedback from stranger!
I love it, but what do you think?
    -A

  18. We chose Elizabeth because we have both male and female infertility factors. We were told IVF was our only option a few weeks before we found out we were pregnant with her. She’s our miracle and we wanted something to reflect that and be a reminder. Elizabeth in the Bible was barren and God blessed her with a son, John the Baptist.

  19. It’s a family name, classic, and many different nicknames

  20. She’s named after a great grandmother. My husband likes classical names so it was perfect. There are several nickname options which can be overwhelming. As of right now, we just call her Elizabeth.

We chose the middle name Grace because she’s our miracle baby

  28. The name was revealed to my husband in a dream even before we knew I was pregnant.

  29. I love the name

  30. We love the meaning (oath or promise of God) of Elizabeth. She was born at a time in my life when there was much uncertainty and the promises of God were an anchor to me. It was also the middle name of a precious aunt that I had lost. She goes by the nickname of ‘Elle’ now and it suits her playful personality well!

  31. I love the names Elizabeth

  32. My middle name is Elizabeth and its the only name my ex-husband and me could agree on lol

  33. Elizabeth is our daughters middle name. Named after my sister

  34. We liked traditional, biblical names. But wanted a nickname for when she was young. Elizabeth has no shortage of nicknames. Our Elizabeth is “Elsie“, which is an uncommon option, but is a family name and we loved the name Elsie too. Love the meaning of Elizabeth and also her namesake in the Bible. Great name! 😉

  35. Coming from a very abusive background I wanted to change the direction my family had taken.
This name means “consecrated to God”, so I tried to submit the raising of her to a spiritual direction.

  36. This is my daughter’s middle name and we chose it because it’s the name of my husband’s grandmother who raised him. We liked using the name of someone so important to us who has passed away. If we had used it for a first name the only thing I might dislike is some of the possible nicknames (Beth, Betty, Liz, Lizzy) and would want to establish her nickname before someone started calling her one that I don’t like.

  37. Our oldest daughter is Elizabeth. She is named after her maternal grandmother. DD is 12 now and a very sweet and seems to care deeply for others needs. She is also bold when the situation calls for it. Her middle name is Jeanine.

  38. It was a family name. Traditional with a lot of options for nicknames although we haven’t been able to decide on one. She has many!!! Everyone wants it to be something different
