I realized I was in labor when I started having intense cramps. Went to my doctor and was informed that I was at 2cm dilated.

Active labor for me was very intense. It was the most challenging part for me. It was a minute, sometimes 30 seconds apart contractions at 7cm.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

My husband and I attended a childbirth class which gave us not only knowledge about the process of childbirth but has empowered us to opt for a natural birth. I had a very supportive birth team, my doctor is an advocate of natural birthing in a hospital setting. Meetings with my doula was also a big help. She gave me exercises and birthing affirmation tracks I listened to. I also attended a prenatal yoga class and practiced every day. But the most helpful thing was the support and encouragement given by my husband.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I was surprised by how my body and baby worked together! My baby was stable the whole 12 hours of labor and 4 hours of pushing! It's overwhelming and empowering experience for me!

  • Don't stress about the result of the birth, just go through it moment by moment. Keep in mind that you are loved and that there's this lovely being coming.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Doing standing positions with my husband, kneling, inversion and warm shower worked for me!

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    Semi-lithotomy

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

It was such a bliss, just pure joy!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Key is to prepare for it not just physically but mentally, emotionally and even spiritually. It can get very, very painful but it's true, you go through the pain by focusing on your breathing and being relaxed. Don't stress about the result of the birth, just go through it moment by moment. Keep in mind that you are loved and that there's this lovely being coming.
