Sebastian Name Meaning

Sebastian is a Greek name derived from sebastos, meaning “venerable” or “honorable.” The name is also linked to the Latin Sebastianus, meaning “from Sebaste.”

Sebastian is a refined choice among today’s boy names, standing out with his posh feel and substantial size. Male monikers are typically shorter in length and syllables, though Sebastian dares to be different like Maximilian, Benjamin, and Christopher. He’s also a surprising S name choice, similar to Silas, Samuel, and Seth.

Sebastian is a name that wears many hats, ranging from strong to soft depending on his use. He’s the perfect name for a poet but could just as easily fit a powerful politician. He’s versatile as can be though always debonair, earning extra attention with his use. While mighty and bold, Sebastian has an assortment of nicknames from the short Bast and Seb to the longer Bastian to help temper his heaviness for use earlier in life.

Notably, Sebastian was the name of a Christian martyr who went on to be granted sainthood by the Catholic Church. In Medieval times, Saint Sebastian was believed to protect those who worshiped him from the Plague. His likeness can be found throughout Medieval paintings due to this sudden interest.

  1. Besides it being my great grandfathers name we felt Sebasti?n is a strong confident name. And our little boy is certainly strong!

  2. We chose Sebastian because it was strong and unique, without sounding to out there. We loved the way it sounded with our chosen middle name as well; Edward. I don’t like that people associate it with the crab from the little mermaid.

  3. We just liked the name! It means venerable, and since this is the first child for both sides of the family, he is certainly being venerated, lol.

  4. But here comes Sebastian Vettel!

  5. yes name is benhbn ii like ben its name

  6. We just loved it. Middle name is a family name Thomas.
Our daughter is called Beatrice and we felt the names went well together!

  7. Honestly we just liked the way it sounded.

  8. We wanted something different for our sweet boy this name it’s just perfect

  9. Sebastian is our third baby. We already have Nathaniel and Ameliana. We prefer longer first names with meaning. Sebastian means venerable (honored for character and wisdom). We liked the sound of the name and also the meaning. I read a ton of baby name books, watched a lot of baby name videos on YouTube and used a bunch of baby name tools online.

We chose Jude (one who praises God) and Lowen (a Cornish name that means joyful or happy) as middle names.

  10. I have always liked the name, it came from movie “the little mermaid”

  11. Sebastian loves to eat

    • I do like to eat!

      • me too!

  12. before I met my husband , I had a daughter out of wedlock so this is his first child and he always wanted a son named Sebastian so I let him pick it… I didn’t like it at first but now that I have him it has grown on me and I like his name now (-:

  13. We chose Sebastian from the Disney movie, The Little Mermaid. It is one of my all time favorites.

    • i dont like this movie

      • Don’t you wish our name be used on cooler characters? lol

  14. My husband and I both loved the name and we were watching a series and our favorite character was named Sebastian so when we got pregnant and found out it was a boy we just knew his name would be Sebastian.

  15. Sebastian is a little bit of an old fashioned name. It also isn’t super common, at least not around me and I liked the way is went with my daughter’s name, Isabella. She liked that it’s a character in one of her favorite movies, The Little Mermaid. Ultimately I pictured myself talking to my baby Bash and even practiced calling his name out loud and it just felt right. When he was born, I looked at his little face and I knew Sebastian was definitely the right choice.

  16. It wouldn’t let me update it but he has a twin brother named Lukas .

  17. It was the first name I thought of I love how powerful the name Sebastian is and the meaning behind it. What I do like is I’m going to have to teach my son how to spell his long name . I feel the name fits with my son very well.

  18. My son’s dad named him Sebastian after the Little Mermaid. Lol I had a C-section and wasn’t going to name him Sebastian bc i hated it lol But he named him while I was still on pain meds. Now i adore it. It’s strong. He’s quite strong willed.

  19. I had his first name picked out until I came across “Sebastian” while looking for middle names. I absolutely fell in love with it and couldn’t be offered every dime in the world to change it. I stumbled upon it when reading the Social Security list of popular baby names in 2008. It was way way way down the list. I couldn’t see any other name. It was perfect. Sebastian is my sons name. I felt so deeply for his name just as I did with my 2 oldest children. That’s how i knew i was making the right choice. I love how it’s not a super popular name that every other child has

  20. My husband and I have a love of travel. Our latest trip to San Sebastian, Spain was when we decided to grow our family – and then little Sebastian was on his way! We love that it sounds the same in multiple languages and is inspired by one of our favorite places on earth. We call him “Seb” for short.

    • My name is Sebastian

      • Me too!

        • wow same
