Birth Stories

How Brittany had a Natural Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I was awoken at about 1 am to the sudden urge to go to the bathroom. This continued for the next half hour and I realized that this may be the start of labor.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The fear of not knowing what was happening and letting go.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I did hours upon hours of research and reading. I read Ina May's books, studied and listened to Hypnobabies and watched video after video on natural birth as well as The Business of Being Born.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

    How fast it went!

  • Deep breathing and music worked best for me. I closed myself in a dark room (my bathroom) and sat on the toilet while I listened to calming music.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Deep breathing and music worked best for me. I closed myself in a dark room (my bathroom) and sat on the toilet while I listened to calming music.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I was on my knees and could have delivered that way but the doctor made me turn around on my back.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

It was definitely overwhelming because everything went super fast. I was in shock!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Your body can do it, you can do it. No matter how afraid there is a peace that comes over you when you let go and let your body do the work for you. As scared as I was I feel so empowered that I was the one to deliver my baby, no one else. My body and baby boy worked together to perform this absolute miracle to bring him into this world.
