Let’s Recap!

Want to see all of the different types of homesteads in one place? Get a sneak peek at all of the answers below:

You are a farmsteader…

You are a true farmer, mama. As it turns out, you have exactly what it takes to run (and profit from!) an organic farm.

But you’ll need acreage to graze your animals and to grow crops, an Artesian well or two, and plenty of freezer and storage space, since the nearest town is not close at all!

Maybe you’ll install solar panels, too. Why not, right?

When it comes down to it, you’ll work long, tiring days—but it will all be worth it when you look out over your homestead and know you are living (and helping others to live) a very sustainable life.

You are a hobby farmer…

You crave the farm life and don’t mind forgoing some conveniences to get it.

Your ideal homestead is a place that is just big enough for a couple of animals. Maybe some cows, goats, sheep, pigs, and chickens. You’d also love to have enough space to grow a year’s supply of food—fruits, veggies, and grains.

And don’t forget about a deep freezer. You’re going to need that—along with some canning supplies to preserve that nice big bounty you’ll harvest!

Hey, maybe you can even sell a few things at the farmer’s market or barter with other farmers. No matter, all-in-all you farm for the joy of it.

You are a modern homesteader…

You enjoy the small town feel and don’t mind having to travel a ways to get to a grocery store, but you don’t want to feel completely isolated, either.

A house in a small town where you can have a few backyard chickens and a garden that’s large enough to feed your family. It may be on the small side, but this is the best homestead for you.

You have some freedom with how you use your yard (goats are allowed in your village, right?), but aren’t too far from civilization. A perfect balance? We’d venture to say so…

You are a suburban gardener…

You enjoy the safety of a cul-de-sac neighborhood, but crave a sustainable life. A nice home in a safe neighborhood with just enough space for a small garden in the backyard is perfect for you.

Being near the city means you’ll have access to natural food stores and farmers markets without having to drive too far as well. The curbside, zero-sort recycling ain’t bad either!

You are an urban balcony gardener…

You thrive on the bustle of the city, but want to live a sustainable life. An urban apartment or loft is perfect for you.

Between your balcony herb garden, community garden space, and all of the amazing farmer’s markets nearby, you can live in the city and still enjoy the benefits of homegrown and organic food.

Being in the heart of the city means you can travel by foot or bike most of the time too, reducing your carbon footprint.
