Birth Stories

How April Achieved a Vaginal Birth After Induction

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

    I didn't. I was induced at 5am the morning of January 23rd.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Pitocin contractions. They are at least 10x more painful than normal contractions. It hurt more than anything I've ever experienced.

  • April
  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

To he honest, nothing can truly prepare you for childbirth. It is the most intense experience in life.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

The fact that as soon as I pushed her out, I didn't remember labor. I remember that it hurt but I can't quite remember the type of pain.

  • The most surprising part of birth was the fact that as soon as I pushed her out, I didn't remember labor. I remember that it hurt but I can't quite remember the type of pain.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Ha. I ended up using some IV drugs. Dilaudid. I think breathing was my best natural course, and I think if I could have had a non-induced labor I could have made it with just breathing.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

On my back arched in the air as I was in a hospital.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

I couldn't stop crying, she was perfect and the pain of birth and pregnancy was worth it all for that moment.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Avoid induction if possible. Don't feel bad if you do need medication to help though. Let your wishes be known before hand and make sure you have a good support team. Stay moving (swaying, walking, dancing). Just remember that no matter what happens as long as you and baby are alive and healthy that is all that matters.
