Birth Stories

Emily's First Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

My water broke at 1am when I was 1 day shy of 38 weeks along.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

For me, my contractions stalled, and because of risk of infection from my water breaking, my doctor highly recommended that I be put on Pitocin. Although it was my first birth experience, I know there is no way that natural contractions are anything like Pitocin-induced contractions. I almost blacked out because of the excruciating pain.

My husband and I watched countless videos and spent a lot of time in prayer.

  • Prepare yourself mentally and spiritually and don't allow yourself to give into fear.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

    Breathing and back massages

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I was in a squat position, using a squat bar until the doctor came in, at that point, I laid on my back.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

It felt amazing. I was in awe the moment I saw him emerge and they held him up to me.

Prepare yourself mentally and spiritually and don't allow yourself to give into fear.
