Birth Stories

Filled Water Bottle And Hip Squeeze Helped Brittany Achieve Natural Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I wasn’t sure that I was in labor until 7 PM, although I had been having fairly regular contractions for a few hours.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

People telling me that I couldn’t do it, but I used that to power through labor.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Research, research, research! I read Ina Maye’s Guide to Natural Childbirth and Mama Natural’s book, made two playlists and tennis ball back massager, filled my water bottle and asked my husband to pass it to me as needed.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I had my natural birth (despite the hospital setting)! No meds whatsoever.

  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

My husband passed my water bottle to me regularly and squeezed my hips to move my baby down. I don’t know if I could’ve done it without his help.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I delivered her on my back. It’s my only regret. The midwife told me she had back issues (while I was in active labor) and that position was the best way for her to help me.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Perfect! I felt so accomplished that I had her naturally.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

If people laugh and roll their eyes when you mention that you’re going natural, ignore them. Block them if necessary. You can tell them off afterward.
