When did you realize you were really in labor?
When I had lost my mucus plug the day before and contractions gradually increased in frequency and duration over the course of 24 hrs. I used distractions during the early stages and when I could tell things were intensifying I called my doula!

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Knowing when was the right time to head to the hospital. This was where having my doula was very helpful.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Hiring a doula and reading natural childbirth books.

What surprised you about your birth?
How quickly it progressed. I went from 5 cm to pushing within minutes.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Deep breathing, hands and knees, shower and bath, swaying and leaning on the birth ball.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
A huge relief and a sense of pride in trusting my body to do what it needed to. And of course, I fell in love all over again with his sweet face.

What did you name your baby, and why?
We named him after my late father-in-law, Jamey.
