Hiring a Doula Helped Liz During Her Home Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

We were lying in bed and I felt a "pop!" I realized my water had broke, but my contractions didn't start until about an hour later.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Going all natural is such a mental process, you have to get your mind focused on the beautiful life that is about to come. This is definitely the most challenging part.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

We hired a doula! Best thing to have during labor!

  • What surprised you about your birth?

My labor and delivery was a total of 5 hours! It surprised me how fast it went! This was half the time of my first birth.

  • The pain is temporary and enduring it is worth every moment when you are holding your sweet child.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

My doula would do counter pressure on my lower back and being in the tub relieved a bit and helped me relax more.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    Sitting with my legs up.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Blessed and overwhelmed by the love that could come from the pain that I just endured. The most amazing moment.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

It's SO worth it!! The pain is temporary and enduring it is worth every moment when you are holding your sweet child. It also helps that you aren't feeling after effects of pain medicine or epidural during the most important time after giving birth.
The best advice I can give is finding a birthing class that also includes the husband to help you prepare and definitely hire a doula!
