Birth Stories

Reading Positive Birth Stories Helped Ashley During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

When I woke up a little after midnight to go to the bathroom and my water broke just as I got to the toilet. Contractions started right away.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

I don't feel like I was adequately prepared for the intensity of the contractions, as soon as my water broke and contractions started they were 2 mins apart. That made it difficult to manage and rest between. I did end up asking for an epidural but, looking back now I am thankful that due to a series of events and a quick labor I never got it.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Reading positive birth stories here helped tons! Also reading several articles on Mama Natural and Spinning Babies about exercises to get baby in the optimal position which I think really helped considering my labor was right at 4 1/2 hrs long. I do wish I had done more but I thought I had more time since I went into labor at 37 wks.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How quick it was, how intense it was and that I actually did it since this birth was a VBAC and my whole pregnancy was a waiting game to see if I would be able to go into labor on my own. It was such a happy surprise!

  • Wonderful, euphoric and relief! Since it all happened so quick I was also still in a little bit of shock that she was here!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

I had my mom and husband there and having one of them behind me putting counter pressure on my lower back and the other in front with breathing reminders and encouraging words was the only thing that got me through. Having a great birth team is key! Also vocalizing, I never thought I'd be one of those to be very vocal during birth because I can be a reserved person and held back some at first but once I gave in I felt like it helped!

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    Laying on my right side.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Wonderful, euphoric and relief! Since it all happened so quick I was also still in a little bit of shock that she was here!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Believe in yourself and have an amazing team that is on your side and willing to go through this journey with you! Also prepare your mind, your body and your baby for the best possible outcome!
