Taking a Prenatal Yoga Helped Cynthia During Her Home Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I began having regular contractions about 6pm the evening before she was born. I called my midwife around eight o'clock. I have a history of quick births once they really get going, so I wanted everyone on hand.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Even though I have done this a lot (six natural births, four at home) I still have a period when I get a little panicky about labor, usually somewhere between 32 and 35 weeks. I just try to think "birth without fear", and I also had a great group of friends who gave me a blessing way and got me ready for labor.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I took a prenatal yoga class the last six weeks before the birth, and it was really helpful to get my head in the right place- which is half the battle. Of you're not afraid of the pain, it truly affects you a lot less.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How much more manageable the contractions became once I was in the water. They were not only less intense, but spaced themselves out better.

  • You can do it. No matter what, you can always take a deep breath, and it will help. Also, listen to your body; it will tell you what position to be in. The more calm you can be, the better.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

    Water, counter-pressure on my back

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I was actually in a weird sitting position, sitting on one leg with the other kind of up. What can I say, it felt right at the time, and it gave me a good view of her being born. For my other water birth, I was in my knees.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Incredible. I was so excited to meet her!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

You can do it. No matter what, you can always take a deep breath, and it will help. Also, listen to your body; it will tell you what position to be in. The more calm you can be, the better.
