Birth Stories

Treating Birth As Something Normal Helped Danielle During Her Home Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I woke up with intense contractions that were stopping me in my tracks. I knew I was in early labor. It was about time too! I was 13 days past my due date.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

This was my third birth, second unmedicated birth. I knew how hard it was going to be and I was nervous. The hardest thing was suppressing the fear and forcing myself to relax. I was constantly praying for strength, courage, peace, and confidence. I knew my body could do it, but I didn't know how.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I always treated it as something normal. It was how I would meet my baby. I had to take fear out of it. It wasn't scary. My body knew what to do. I practiced breathing and relaxing through any pain I felt. Relaxing while you're feeling pain isn't easy but the practice paid off.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I was surprised at how calm I was able to stay. Inside I wasn't always calm but I managed to keep my muscles relaxed through contractions. Pushing wasn't as scary or difficult as I remember from my second birth. I knew what I was doing. I felt so in control.

  • Don't be afraid. You CAN do it. Don't listen to the horror stories. They happen less than normal, uncomplicated births. We just don't hear about those boring births as much. Read positive birth stories. Remind yourself everyday that your body was made for this. It knows what to do. Just let it do its thing. And breath. Always breath.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Relaxing the muscles in my face and shoulders really helped. Low breathing or moaning. Breathing into my cervix. Also water. I stood in the shower and held the shower head over my belly. I then moved to the birth pool and had my baby in there.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I was on my knees leaning over the edge of the birth pool.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

I was so happy. I was relieved it was over and excited to finally meet my little one. We didn't know the gender so it was a little extra exciting.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Don't be afraid.
