Birth Stories

Hiring A Doula And Reading Birth Stories Helped Abby During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I never went into labor on my own - I was induced at 41 weeks, due to concerns related to gestational diabetes.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging part was keeping my mind and emotions under control. I had a lot of moments where I told myself (and everyone in the room) that I couldn't do it anymore, but my husband and doula assured me I could, and reminded me that I was already doing it! I considered asking for something to take the edge off the pain but was able to focus on my breathing and remind myself why I had decided to go natural in the first place.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Hiring a doula and reading as many birth stories as I could were the most helpful things. Our doula was an essential part of the labor team, and her encouragement got me through a lot of difficult moments. By reading stories from other women, I was able to mentally prepare for obstacles that might come up, and learn coping techniques to get through them.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I was surprised at how quickly time passed. Each contraction felt like an eternity, but by reminding myself to take them one at a time, I was able to stay in the moment and not get discouraged by thinking of how much longer I had to go.

  • A huge reason I was able to go natural was that I didn't have anyone suggesting I do things differently!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Keeping my muscles relaxed and deep, intentional breaths helped me manage the pain. For back labor, an ice pack worked wonders!

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I had intended to deliver on my side, with my legs down, but ended up being in between side lying and on my back, with my feet in the air. My doctor requested that I lift my feet and legs to speed things up, but I was too tired to do it on my own, so my doula and a nurse held them for me. I was hesitant to try this position, because I didn't want to tear, but it was very effective at getting baby to come out!

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

It was surreal! I couldn't stop staring at her and talking to her, and it was so cool to finally be able to examine all her features.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

If you are passionate about going natural, make sure to inform your doctor and the nursing staff of your goals, and request that no one offers you pain medication. A huge reason I was able to go natural was that I didn't have anyone suggesting I do things differently!
