Water Eased the Pain During Margot's Home Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I lost my mucus plug around 3pm on July 2nd. Strong contractions started around 1am.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

    Transition!

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Birthing classes helped us reinforce our knowledge and strength.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How wonderful and powerful it made me feel. As a woman, having so many restrictions put on you by society, birthing a child, taking control of you body, having a team there to support you, was invaluable.

  • Trust the FACT that your body was MADE to give birth. If you trust that and believe that you can give birth naturally and safely, then, chances are, you will!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Birthing in the water was the best pain control one can have, in my opinion. The fact that you are buoyant takes the edge off of the pain of downward pressure. I wouldn't do it any other way, if given the choice.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

Reclined squatting in the birthing tub. Her head remained in the caul. She shot out like a 10 pound cannon ball on my last push, right into my husband's waiting arms. It was then that I found out that I had delivered healthy baby girl!

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

    Relief. Powerful. Amazement. Then joyous.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Only to trust the FACT that your body was MADE to give birth. If you trust that and believe that you can give birth naturally and safely, then, chances are, you will!
