When did you realize you were really in labor?
When I lost my mucus plug and contractions started picking up after almost 24h of prodromal labor. The whole time I had still been thinking that it was false labor.

The exhaustion, I went for two nights without sleep

Hire a doula and my natural childbirth class

What surprised you about your birth?
Some parts took much longer others were so much faster then expected. I was in early labor forever and nothing really changed and suddenly I was 10cm dilated.

Breathing, different positions and counter pressure

Half sitting, legs on the squat bar and holding on to a rope
