When did you realize you were really in labor?
I woke up very early in the morning and felt the surges were different than the previous weeks. I was sure it was labor but kept quiet.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Worrying that someone would force me to take drugs was my biggest concern.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Prepared my mind and body. Just as a marathon runner prepares for a race I wanted to make sure my mind body and spirt were ready to go on an epic journey.

What surprised you about your birth?
How much more empowering and amazing it was in comparison to what people said.

Have a good support person who will make sure your birth is how you want it to be.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Hot water on my back in the shower during early stages was great. Listening to music that I had used throughout pregnancy to relax to. Being in a warm bath was what made it a gentle birth for everyone involved.

What position did you end up delivering in?
In a spa bath squatting with my head resting on my husband while he rubbed my lower back ( he was in the water with me).

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
I found it hard to believe that my baby was there and alive. After a late miscarriage I found it hard to bond. Knowing he was safe and had come into the world gently was great though.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
-Stop listening to negative stories.
-Become informed from as many different sources as posible.
-Have a good support person who will make sure your birth is how you want it to be.
-Stop being scared and embrace it.
