Birth Stories

Ash Used Water to Ease Birth Pains

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I woke up very early in the morning and felt the surges were different than the previous weeks. I was sure it was labor but kept quiet.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Worrying that someone would force me to take drugs was my biggest concern.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Prepared my mind and body. Just as a marathon runner prepares for a race I wanted to make sure my mind body and spirt were ready to go on an epic journey.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How much more empowering and amazing it was in comparison to what people said.

  • Have a good support person who will make sure your birth is how you want it to be.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Hot water on my back in the shower during early stages was great. Listening to music that I had used throughout pregnancy to relax to. Being in a warm bath was what made it a gentle birth for everyone involved.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

In a spa bath squatting with my head resting on my husband while he rubbed my lower back ( he was in the water with me).

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

I found it hard to believe that my baby was there and alive. After a late miscarriage I found it hard to bond. Knowing he was safe and had come into the world gently was great though.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

    -Stop listening to negative stories.
-Become informed from as many different sources as posible.
-Have a good support person who will make sure your birth is how you want it to be.
-Stop being scared and embrace it.
